We were planning to gift our friend a DSLR. EOS 100D & EOS 450D seem perfect. Was going through the canon site. Couldn't quiet point out the difference between the 2.
Can someone elaborate on this. Also what is the difference of buying a camera with a kit and without. What exactly does the kit contain? I noticed EOS 450D kit EFS

Check these reviews you will get a much better idea

I would go for the 450D considering it's a newer model. If the price difference is minimal, it's better to go for the 450D as opposed to the 1000D. Just a thought!

For starters, 450d has 12.2 mp , 9 point AF, better metering response,higher 3.5 fps,3.0 inch lcd.
1000d offers 10.1 mp,7 point AF,3.0 fps burst,2.5 inch lcd.
Both offer live view but no movie.
Kit refers to the lens that comes bundeled with the body and the combo is generally offered at slightly cheaper rate than their combined independent values.
450d comes with two kit options of 18-55 mm & 18-200 mm.Both of these have IS mechanism. While 1000d comes with 18-55 mm non IS lens which is old & importantly inferior in optics.

alex001 kinda summed it up. :)

However the other non spec differences is that the 450D has a larger and brighter viewfinder as well as a larger grip.

However there is a decent 8k price difference between them.

get the latest nikon D3100 much better than both the above canon ones :)

Key points

14MP

3" LCD screen

11AF points

Live view

Better ISO range 100-3200 (expandable to 12800)

HD movies (1080p, 720p)

^^ Its not available yet and if it does get launched in India it will retail for around 32 - 33k at least in the grey market.

Plus that camera cannot AF with non AF-S lenses so you cannot use the cheap 50mm f1.8 lens with Autofocus on the D3100 while you can easily use the 50mm f1.8 lens on the Canon cameras.

If you want a 50mm prime lens that can AF on the D3100 then you will have to spend 18k for the AF-S 50mm f1.4 which is not much better optically than the cheap 5k 50mm f1.8.

@ AlexThanks mate. It was the kit attachment that i couldn't figure out.
Also if i buy with out a kit, does that mean i get the camera without a lens?

@ravi.r.raj : you can buy a dslr with kit or body only.kit means general purpose lens that every manufacturer offers with a dslr at a cheaper price. For starters kit lens offers a good learning platform.
Purchasing dslr without kit does mean buying body only and not opting for the offered kit lens.
You should do this if your friend already has some similar lens compatible with the camera body that you intend to gift him or if you want to buy diffrent lens for the cam.in any case you need to have compatible lens for functioning of a dslr.
