This happened suddenly on one of my office colleagues phones.

He often keeps facing network issues in office premises and today he got this error on his phones lock screen and no network on his phone..

He tunred on/off airplane mode and the network came back as usual.

He is on tata docomo network on xperia z2 phone.

What can cause this issue?

A quick Google Search says that this was previously Carrier Locked (probably AT&T) and then it was unlocked, so sometimes it gives error. No need to worry, you (he) should worry when even after enabling/Disabling Airplane mode you don't get the network signal. (normally if someone reports the phone stolen then IMEI blocked). Mentioned below are some examples of it

Edit: Doesn't apply to OP's case.
its a first hand phone using since 2 yrs now.

It happens if the phone tries to connect to other non home network. Example- Here in this case the Docomo sim must have tried to connect to some other network like Vodafone or Airtel or Reliance's network since Docomo might not be available. If roaming is not available you will get this error. If roaming is available but Docomo does not have sharing contact with other network you will get the error.

Check the supported bands the phone handles ...carriers in different countries have different band for bot tx and rx. ...
