Is there any way to check whether the drive inside an external HDD is CMR or SMR? For example this Toshiba Canvio 2TB; I've checked but can't find a datasheet for this, and often datasheets don't specify the recording tech used.

One option is to look for the cache size. SMR drives typically have a large cache to compensate for the lower write speeds.
The model you have mentioned seems to have only 8MB (per Google) and is most likely not SMR.
