Extremly Slow Copy from Laptop to external HDD

Not sure whether the section is correct or not. I am facing very slow data transfer speeds between the laptop and external HDD. The problem occurs with both the external HDDs that i have. Just 1 GB of data is taking 15-20 minutes to copy.
I never got the message that "this device can perform faster..." still the issue is there.

delete usb controllers from device manager , let them reinstall themselves on reboot and recheck.....(p.s u might need chipset drivers on reboot, if its there in the windows cache it will take it automatically from the default pool)

^^ Actually this was not the case few days back. Seems this started only this week

Is this 1GB of data a single big file of multiple files?

If it is the latter, copying CAN take long time..

virus attack or update usb drivers uninstall and then update...

Also, laptop drives are slower - 5400 RPM - and if they are multiple files, copying takes a bit of time.
