Garmin nuvi 250w: USB Mass storage mode

Just picked up my Garmin nuvi 250w (friend bought it over from Germany), but he did not bring along the original box and the original USB cable that comes with it. Just the device, suction mount, and car charger.

I tried connecting the device with another USB cable that I have (which BTW works fine with HDDs and other stuff). The GPS just charges with this cable, does not enter "USB mass storage mode". Does not show that "GPS connected to PC" icon either. PC too does not show any USB connected icon. Device Manager also does not report any problems. Nuvi just shows the regular maps and menu interface. What am I doing wrong? I tried it both ways - connecting the USB when the unit is switched on, and connecting it when its switched off. When doing the later, the GPS boots up on its own, but does not enter USB mode.

Have tried this on other machines/ OS as well. Did a soft reset too. Still no luck. Unfortunately, this is the only cable that I have, but I don't think it's a problem with the cable (cable works with other devices), or is it?

As otherwise, the unit seems to be working fine. Has Europe maps installed. I could connect to satellites, could change the settings, could play it in simulation mode, etc. Am just not able to make it talk to a PC.

TIA.

the cable that comes with garmin is normal only. i keep connecting mine using any geenral cable that comes with ext hdd.

if you are trying to put maps on it. try putting on an sd card using card reader.

Thanks, @kekada for your reply, but this cable simply does not seem to work for me. It just charges the unit. I am going to try another cable over the weekend.

Yes, I do have India map now copied onto the SD card (using the laptops SD card reader). The unit has acquired satellites and I've saved my current location in favorites. It does also show me at Mumbai, but I don't think it's showing me any detailed road map. Is there any setting that I need to change so that the nuvi considers my SD card map as the current map instead of the internal Europe map? The file is located at the root in the SD card and is named something like gmapsupp.img

TIA.

Update: Seems that it was the cable. A Y cable does not work with the Garmin Nuvi. I tried using another cable (one from my camcorder), and it worked. I could update the firmware, load india maps and do some navigation. I must say that I sure am impressed by this device and the accuracy of the maps that I have. Am using some freely downloaded unlocked maps at the moment - 186MB in size, but will be soon buying india maps from SatGuide.in. They have an offer going on at the moment just 900 INR for a 1GB SD card with india maps.
