^^6200AGP is all you'll get then. Not a very fast card.

Can any of the 6200s unlock the 4 additional pipelines to get a 6600 level performance ?

^^6200AGP is based on NV44A which means it only has 4 pipes.

Was this some early core which is now discontinued for AGP cards ?

Unlockability is always hit and miss, cant be guaranteed(as i found out myself as well). A 9800 pro would be the best choice for that range but if ur friend still wants new he can put it another 1 grand or so and get a 6600 vanilla 128 MB card.
