Hey,

i need a good server configuration for a college lan
abt 140 comps
80 in one hostel and another 60 in the other...
need a good computer but within reasonable budget limitations. :)

knock yourselves out

Unless you define "reasonable budget limitations", it would be really difficult to suggest anything for you. Would you say 75K is reasonable? Most good, robust, scalable servers are in that range.

Well me dont really know about servers wud really like to know what others post here.

Will a AMD 64 Opteron based server be better or Intel 64 Based server be better.
Also specify what is the purpose of that server.
Also what sort of Mobo will be required for this server & other hardware.

I can just suggest you a server cabby , VIP ZB-01 is a gr8 server cabby.

Also go for a Antec TP or Smart Power based Power supply.

Well this is all i can say.

Another thing, do you want to assemble your own server or do you want to buy one off-the-shelf? Please understand that servers are a different breed of animals and they have their own peculiar needs and problems.

As Aces asked, let us know what will the server be used for mainly. File server? Application server? Internet sharing? Web server? FTP? Mail? I could go on and on, so let us know more. Yeh Dil Maange More...

Mail and CS and a lot of in house services for the college like the library and stuff like that.. prefer intel based servers.. either assembled or off the shelf

You dont need a server for that get a powerful PC with fast HDD, and loads of RAM.
Get those 10k RPM SATA drives, and get and AMD 64 based system. Go for Gigabyte Nforce 4 based mobos solely for their extra features. If possible get a pair of HDD's in RAID config.

Yeps I second that.Your requirements seem to be very mediocre to buy a proper server machine which packs a punch.Though this would also depend on "in house services" that will be hosted on the server which you havent specified.
As for backup purposes I would rather suggest a SATA RAID 5.A dvd burner would be good too but burning large amounts of data can become a cumbersome job on a day to day basis.
You can go in for the Kunhar cabby which quad mentioned.I just got myself a Antec 3000B.

There is another side to the above.
In future your requirements may be different & more demanding. So it would also be advisable to make a buying decsion with "scalabitliy" in mind is ,good cause it would some bucks. So instead of going in for a assembled solution such as the one suggested by aces you could go in for a out of the box solution which I'm not well versed with.I'm sure someone else will help you out with it.

Just my 2 cents.

We;ll, the in house stuff will probably include all that accounting/office stuff.
In my college, apart from the two servers they use to connect to the fibre optic cable backbone and external routers, they use regular PC for the lab servers, and we have a total of 300 - 400 computers I guess.
