What is Google Finance?
Google Finance is an early beta product that offers a broad range of information about North American stocks, mutual funds and public and private companies along with charts, news and fundamental financial data.

How is Google Finance different from existing financial websites?

Google Finance offers an easier way to search for stocks, mutual funds, public and private companies. Further, Google Finance also offers a broad range of company news and information in order to deliver more relevant, unbiased results in a clean, uncluttered user interface.

Here are some specific Google Finance features:

* Company Search — With Google Finance you can search for stocks, mutual funds, public and private companies, using both company names and (where available) ticker symbols.

* Interactive Charts — Google Finance charts correlate market data with corresponding dated news stories to help you determine if there is a relationship between them (for instance, by seeing news stories that came out about a certain company in the context of what that company's stock did that day). You can also click and drag the charts to see different time periods and zoom in to see more detailed information.

* News and More News — Google Finance incorporates our Google News service, which gathers stories from more than 4,500 English news sources worldwide. Stories are clustered by topic so you can see different opinions on a single subject; you can also review news stories by monthly date range and by importance (which is determined by algorithms).

* Blogs — If you want the opinions of citizen journalists, you got 'em; Google Finance includes company-related postings from Google Blog Search.

* Company Management Team — Google Finance helps you put a face to a name. Mousing over an executive name shows you their picture as well as links, where available, to their biography, compensation details and trading activity.

* Discussion Groups — Talk amongst yourselves. Google Finance offers high-quality Discussion Groups whose dedicated team of moderators work to keep conversations on and spam-free.

* Portfolios — Google Finance offers a fast, easy and powerful way to keep create and maintain your portfolio of stocks and mutual funds.

How does Google Finance work? Where does your financial content come from?
Google Finance works by combining content we've licensed from financial data providers with content we've crawled and indexed from the web. The result is an easier approach to helping you find and manage financial information online.

How do I access Google Finance?
There are several ways to access Google Finance:

1. Go directly to http://finance.google.com
2. Search for an exchange-supported ticker symbol on Google.com and click on the chart or Google Finance link that you'll see at the top of your search results
3. Click on the ticker symbols on your personalized homepage or Desktop Sidebar
4. Click on the Google Finance link on the Google Search: More, more, more page

Why is Google Finance in "beta"?
The "beta" label means that the product is still being tested and refined; we generally find that the best way to improve new products is to get feedback directly from users on what works and what doesn't. So if you have comments or suggestions about Google Finance, we'd love to hear from you.

What's next from Google Finance?
We can't say anything specific about future versions of this product, except to promise that we'll continue to improve it as much as possible based on our users' feedback. You can stay up to date on all Google Finance enhancements and changes by joining the Google Finance discussion group on Google Groups.

What Google.com searches trigger Google Finance results?

If you search for an exchange supported ticker symbol or mutual fund on Google.com, we'll return the price (which may be delayed, as noted on the Finance results page), along with an intra-day chart, the daily high and low, and other useful information. When available, we'll also return quotes from an Electronic Communication Network (ECN), a computerized trading system that reports quotes in real time. Click on the chart or Google Finance link at the top of your search results to visit the corresponding company page in Google Finance.

Wanna know why they do it? They built a billion dollar company only through advertising... that means they have only ONE revenue-generating product, Google Search :)

While Search worked out GREAT for them, it's not going to take the company to the next level... therefore, they have to build other products that will. However, you don't know which product will be successful - eg. when they launched Google.com noone including Larry/Sergey thought it would be worth a billion $$$. So they're launching a number of products in BETA and hope that eventually one or more will be extremely successful, and like Search, bring in revenue ;) Until then, Search will continue to be Google's cash-cow... end of story!

LOL, here's another theory of mine... products will stay in BETA until it starts generating more revenue for Google. Today, 5% of revenue comes from other non-Search products... you'll see some of these products come out of BETA once this 5% starts growing (bear in mind that their advertising revenue continues to grow ;))
