Got the PS3 Move

Finally ordered PS3 Move Starter Pack from Intencity.in and got it delivered on the next day!!! my second purchase from intencity.in and both times i got my stuff in 24 hours which is great.

Connected the Move yesterday night after coming from work and installed all demos which come with the starter pack. Here are my first impressions:

1. There are just 2 USB ports on PS3 Slim and the cam takes up 1 port, not very impressed.
2. Cam quality very very poor. max resolution of 640 x 480.. a game like eyepet shows you on the screen and all that HD beauty of PS3 goes down the drain.
3. Games very inconsistent:
a. Eyepet requires you to keep the camera on ground or point the camera towards the ground, and even after spending like 30 mins on it, am not able to play with my pet.
b. Beat Sketcher
requires you to hold the motion controller atleast 1.5 m away from the camera (so had to move the camera and point it upwards again. went all the way back to the room which im sure is about 2.5 to 3 m but the game still didnt go ahead the screen which said "hold the controller atleast 1.5m away from the screen and press O.
c. Sports champions:
you get to play table tennis and disc golf, both played nice and was fun to play. the realism with simplicity is great. for eg. you may miss the ball if you move the controller from very high or low. if the other player makes a slow drop shot, you have to move forward to hit it. The game is generous enough to let go off of your hand speed, i.e. while serving or hitting a shot only if you hit it too hard, it will go haywire. most of the times the ball with remain in control
d. TV Superstars,
fun to play, you just have to move your hands from here to there as it is shown on the screen
e. Tiger woods Gold 2011
quite nice and realistic simulation, detects very accurately.
f. Echochrome ii
interesting game, works nicely. no problems
g. Tumble...
awesomeee.. the block moves exactly as you move the controller (inch by inch, angle by angle), you have to play it as if you are actually holding a block and have to keep it very precisely. was highly impressed by the depth on the screen (you can move the box forward, backward, up, down, left, right it moves as you move the motion controller and in the exact same angle of the motion controller. you can also turn it round by turning the motion controller)

h. The Shoot...
Everyone's favorite, VCop2 is back in a different avatar!!! shoot em' bad guys as the camera moves around by itself in a wild wild west themed movie set of a movie in which you are a hero, just take care not to shoot the civilian girls. it apparently has a "bullet time" sort of power up where everything slows downs but haven't played this game well enough so don't know. Overall this game is very much fun as you shoot the bad guys appearing on the screen by "realisticly" pointing the motion controller towards them instead of the good ol' mouse.

Overall i would say the tracking is good atleast it works great in sports games.

i didnt like the fact that some games want you to stand close to the camera and some want you to stand far. also just to play eyepet, i do not wish to go and change the camera angle everytime.
if the orb is not being seen by the camera, it instantly loses its sight. happend in disc golf where i held the motion controller behind me and it showed that the cam is not able to see the orb, neverthless the cam caught it very quickly when it was back in view and there were no glitches in gameplay whatsover.

some review sites are complaing about the big glowing orb distracting the player, but i don't think it will be distracting for the players, since the players eyes would be fixated on the screen while the controller will be held most of the times between the chest and the belt. Although it is still quite bright, can see the reflection in my plasma if that part of the area is dark and if people see you with that big light, they will think you are going crazy...
Thanks for reading.
Regards,
Moshel

Confirm that you don't have a defective camera. Playstation Eye is one of the best Webcam's you can get for under 2k. It does 640 x 480 @ 60FPS even under poor conditions where most other webcam's that claim 30FPS capture can't manage 15FPS. The quality however is pretty avg and these would be noise in low light conditions. But the fact that it does not lag nor have motion blur makes it one of the best webcam's for any motion sensing projects and is quite a popular choice for research in this area. But just remember that while the cam performs pretty decent compared to most other webcam's, poor lighting does not lend to good motion sensing. So basically the quality shouldn't be as bad as you are describing. If you are expecting uber quality HD video out of a webcam that costs less than 2k, then you are expecting too much though.

Do remember guys that the effectiveness of any motion sensing system that uses a camera is heavily dependent on the environment. like the lighting, background objects etc. If people are having problems with Move with uses one of the most ideal of motion sensing strategies (Visual + other hand held sensors) , just imagine how bad Kinnect will be under similar conditions considering it depends on a visual sensors a lot more.

i got move played with it for some time now

its bad that u need to set it up every time u start the game

and it depends a lot on where the cam is placed finding a right spot for game is pain in the a** (more worst is its different for different games some games work well if cam is place below the tv some above tv )

over all i can rate it only 4 out of 10 if ur looking for out of the box experience

I do not own Heavy Rain, so unfortunately cannot check it out.

@lord nemesis, What I have noticed is that when in the "Accessory Settings" menu it shows the cam's video which looks quite acceptable, like a regular webcam. but in the eyepet game it looks very weird with green dots all across the screen. Maybe because a 640 x 480 video is getting stretched to 720p? All things said, I wish the cam would have been better even if it was a bit expensive (we paid B***dy 20K for the console, everything should be best!!!)

I agree with Akarsh's comments. But i got my hopes high on this, Sony will push this and things are sure to improve in the coming weeks.

PS3 Move uses the same cam which we get for ps2 eye

even i have the sane problem with green dots all across the screen

one more thing is that this move has no rumble and speaker as in wii

and there is lag also

it should be the best cause you paid 20k???????????????????

you knew what it was before, the best thing doesn't make sense

no it doesn't use the same cam as PS2 eyetoy,it is an upgraded one and there isn't any lag

if you think that then you should feel the same with DS3 as MOVE's response time is 22ms and DS3's rate is 18ms

about the speaker, the PS EYE has speaker so MOVE doesn't need to have one

and move has rumble

as far i read it the same PS2 eyetoy

and about the lag i am using it so i can feel the lag for sur

about the speaker wii has speaker in the controller and it place the sounds like when the ball hits the bat only that sound is played from it which gives u a nice good real effect
move has rumble ?? i dont think so (may be it has not been used in the demos i play )

As far as I know, Move uses the Playstation Eye and not the PS2 Eye Toy. The Playstation Eye is superior in many ways compared to the Eye Toy. Better resolution, higher lag free FPS, better sensitivity and ability to send raw video streams (without any compression or compression induced artifacts)

Not every one can afford to spend a premium on each accessory after spending 20k on the console. How many would buy Move if they have to spend 7~8k (considering the cost of avg HD capable web cams) for the best camera and 5~6k for the best motion Controller after spending 20k for the console. Not many for sure. So they will have to make do.

what does that even mean?

just because you haven't read properly it is the same as eyetoy?

it has been upgraded

and about the lag i am using it so i can feel the lag for sur

i have played sports champions and there is no lag in it

move has rumble ?? i dont think so (may be it has not been used in the demos i play )
then the games are your problem not MOVE so stop badmouthing it

its his view so let it be..

@OP you did a good review. ON move myself though only enjoying the sports champion pack. as lame gladiator or Bocce sounds they are good fun. TT definately is best among all sports game. Hope some time they come out with a Lawn Tennis game too that would be way to good.

waiting to try Golf , thanks for telling bout it.

Great review, do give a verdict saying whether or not its worth the purchase.
Explain what TV Superstars is like though.
