I was happily gaming at 1440*900 few months back with my 19 inch monitor,,I bought a new 24 incher and problem started while playing game at 1920x1080.. I am getting hardly playable fps below 30 in games like mafia 2,BFBC2 (low details,AF/AA offed),,I have yet to benchmark in Crysis yet. here is my current rig spec --
  • Proccey - E5200 OCed to 3.3 GHZ
  • PSU- Corsair CX400
  • RAM-2X2 gb ddr2 (800)
  • I want to play in 1920x1080, medium to high details with or without AA (4X AA will be nice though)

Should I get a new graphics or wait for 7XXX series ?

I have 6850 or a 5770 in mind ? Is there any other Nvidia offering in sub 10k range ? I was not following nvidia gpu for a long time. I want to try my hands in nvidia as some of game that i love is more biased to nvidia ( Batman AA for exp , n hope Batman AA will follow the same path)

I want to keep my rig setup intact, atleast for this year. If changing the gpu will change the scenerio for time being, it will work for me.

Thanks in Advance J

^^ A perfect suggestion..

If you dont want to spend on proccy now, then just get 6850 IMO

Regarding 7xxx series, yes they will be more powerful and better architecture wise, but theres always some or the other thing to come, If you can make up your mind to wait till 7xxx series launch then its fine, but if cant wait anymore and are desperate for gfx card, get the 6850, bottleneck would not be an issue with this card and CX400 can handle it easily

even if he takes 6850,look at his motherboard as well.

its g31.it may not be having PCI express 2

OP-- you need to overall upgrade your motherboard and processor as well.

Pcie 1.1, that's more than enough. THe bandwidth it provides hasn't been exceeded by today's GPUs (maybe the 30k PLUS ones)

IMO avoid HD6790, no VFM

No no...6790 is good card...I have installed and ran games like metro2033, crysis2 on this card on full HD yesterday itself... Its a great card for 8.2K... But is really long compared to 6850

The minimum required to play at 19x10 is a 6970/6950 plus Core i5 > 3Ghz min.

And even then many games would need a lot lot more juice.

as per expectation, rite has chimed in with his useless advice.

OP--dont bother about core i5 >3ghz thing.

he has obsessive compulsive disorder of exaggerating .

@ptidiot, Have you tried Core 2 Duo 7/8 series AND Core 2 Quad 9xxx AND Core i7 8xxx AND Core i7 SB. You haven't. But I have and I know what makes what kind of a difference.

For him a 6850 to 6990 won't make the experience (not fps but experience) much better, but with a 6800 series card a Core i5 can do wonders, a C2Q will suck compared to a Core i5. And everything can't be calculated through avg fps. You need to play live to notice the difference.

Of course, you need to first try it first hand to experience all this.

I dont want to start as flaming or anything here.

I have gamed on all generations of intel as well as amd right from days athlon and pentium 4.

and talking of what suits what,OP may be having budget restrictions and we as fellows should be pointing to best possible solution for his needs.

@rite... You are not rite on this comment.. We are TE family :) I think OP is happy to play games on medium settings on full hd reso... E5200 with 6850 will play the games according to OP's liking for sure.. not high end like yours but will definitely bring peace of mind to OP and thats what is important in this case where a person has something to think about mainly because of financial terms IMO.

@OP , you said you were baised towards Nvidia, but in the 10K range the 6850 beats hell out of nvidia cards in performance, price, power reqs, size, cooling ....

guys.,,first,, i thought my mobo gigabyte g31 has pci 2 - but as per com@addict n pratik is 1.1,,damn its a kinda heartbreaking :(,,as for upgrade plan ,right now i only want to upgrade graphics card-will think for full upgrade end of this year or 2012,,

as a Quadcore proccey-do u think getting an used Q3 will solve the matter

as for gpu,,i donot think my psu support anything above 6850 ? and as chirag mentioned, where can i get a 6790 for 8.2k ??

you are right..i dont want a 70-80 fps with highest details,,rather i will be happy with 40-50 fps with high to medium details depending on game to game.. The baising towards nvidia is only due to since some of the game worked better in nvidia, as batman aa this year,,and upcoming batman ac is one my most anticipated game- n i dont want to be get stepmom treatement due to ati/amd card;but i understand that in my budget n everything ati/amd is way to go,,but still..

6790 sapphire 8.2K @ primeabgb.. make sure it can fit in your cabby

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

you wont be getting 40 to 50 fps on that reso at high settings with e5200 with 6850... at med details with AA off, you should get about 35 to 45 depending upon game

Well regarding you question of taking a used quad right now, I say DONT. You have already decided to upgrade system in end 2011, so better save money and get a new one at that time, More peace of mind :)
