Graphic Cards Graphic card and monitor combo

Hi All,

I'm looking for a graphics card and monitor to buy. It's been ages since I've kept in touch with gfx cards, so I'm not sure about the model. I prefer nVidia only, for CUDA, since I will be using it for testing.

Purpose of gfx card:

1. Gaming

2. Image and video editing

3. HD movies

Budget : Max 10k

Current rig config:

Processor AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE

Motherboard Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H

RAM Corsair 2x4GB RAM XMS3 1600MHz

Cabinet NZXT Gamma

PSU/SMPS Corsair VX 450

Will the SMPS support the card without a fit? I had an XFX 8600 GTX card which died on me. XFX seems to have heat issues. Is Sapphire better? Please do suggest a good card manufacturer.

Coming to the monitor.

Size: 24" LED (prefer not to use LCD)

Budget : 10-12k

Found Dell UltraSharp U2412M to be very inviting. Is it worth the extra money spent? Considering the hot/dead pixels these monitors come up in a few years, I'm wondering if I should settle for Dell S2330MX.

No nVidia card except the GTX 550Ti will run effectively on your SMPS, so you are really short on options here, also the similar priced AMD HD 6850 will easily outpace the same [GTX 550Ti]. Also the GTX 550Ti and the AMD HD 6850 will be at the extreme edges of their performance envelope once pushed too the 1080p resolution, you will have to tone down the eye-candy in order to derive decent frame-rates.

Please note Sapphire makes only AMD cards.

Okay if you are on a budget please look at the Dell Ultrasharp U2312M ~14500/-, yes the Ultrasharp series from Dell is a better class of monitors because they use an eIPS panel instead of TN panel in their monitors, colour gamut is improved and viewing angles are also better [without loss / distortion of colour at the edges].

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPS_panel

Also Dell has a good service and exchange policy in India so any dead pixels that you see [greater > 3 dots on screen], then they will replace it for you.

Hope this helps, Cheers!!

But if you only want to buy a nVidia card, get this --> http://www.techenclave.com/classifieds/item/587-msi-gtx460-cyclone-1gd5-oc/ + buy a Seasonic S12II 520W ~3500/- and over-clock the GTX 460 and extract some extra performance from it.

Hope this helps, Cheers!!

Thanks for the info. Didn't know that the gfx cards are such electricity hoggers! Still, which card manufacturer?? Sticking to nVidia

The whole rig is just few months old. So, I will stick to the current PSU. Will probably consider the GTX 550i. Thanks for your input

Then better go for the MSi Cyclone GTX 460 [te deal thread I have hotlinked], it performs better than the GTX 550Ti and you will be able to game with greater fidelity.

Please note the addition of the Seasonic SMPS will give all your PC components extra breathing space for future expansion.

Hope this helps, Happy Holi!!
