Hi Guys,

I have a 2 year old desktop which I intend to use for moderate gaming and HD media viewing. The CPU doesn't have a dedicated graphics card and has a cheap PSU which I doubt don't handle the power requirements of a graphics card.
Processor: Core 2 duo E8400
RAM: 4 GB
Motherboard: ASUS P5N73-AM
Monitor: Samsung P2350 23" full HD

My requirement is to use it basically to view HD media content(the VGA input on the monitor looks like crap) and to do gaming for couple of hours over the weekend. My budget is 10k (don't want to invest much on a old rig). Please give me some suggestions.

Thank You,

Krishna

MSI HD5770 + Corsair VX450W @~10.4k...I'd go with that! and please don't settle for a cheap psu. Invest in the right product!

Well, a HD6850 is kinda recommended, and even a 2k GPU like a FSP 430W or something should do it(HD6850 very close to HD5770 in power consumption).

However, HD6850 performs much much better than HD5770.

Seeing your budget, HD5770 + VX450 is already hitting the 10.2k mark.

But when you say "don't want to invest much on a old rig", that seems inappropriate. When you move to the VX450 (which you should do ASAP), here's what happens:

1. Your e8400 will be running at 3.4Ghz with a tiny overclock. It's already is a very potent and proven CPU. (Can do 3.8Ghz easily if some hardcore game asks for it)

2. Your monitor is already quite latest as it's a Full HD 1920x1080 resolution.

3. You have quite enough RAM: 4GB

Conclusion: You have a pretty good rig. All its lacks is some GPU powah! HD6850 as suggested by some will be just perfect to make your computer into Latest-Hi-Entertainment-Machine.

Basically you don't need a new computer, just take good care of this one by extending your budget by 3.5k.

EDIT: Just suggested a VX450 so that it doesn't hiccup any future hardware upgrade. A CX400 is also enough.
