Laptops Hardisk partition on laptops

hey guys,
i want a partition on my preloaded windows vista laptop.its the hp dv4 series.please advice how to have a partition so that to protech my data .
 
* Open start menu.

* Type "management"

* Open computer management

* Select Disk Management from the left side pane

* Right click on the partition you want to shrink (you will be making a new partition from the space on this drive)

* Select "shrink volume" option

* Choose the amount of free space you want to free

after the space becomes unallocated free space.

* Right click on that portion of the space in the graph and choose New Partition.

This method does not work everytime, it depends on the level of free space in your hard disk. Also, it is better if you defragment your disk before using this method.
