Graphic Cards Having trouble with my gfx card.

hey folks,

i have got some probs with my gfx card.

here i have attache a thumbnail of rthdribl benchmarking.
with it started to artifact in about 20 seconds or so.

initially i had generic psu and i got red artifacts in q4 demo.

then i procured a powersafe from switch 450 w.
the red artifacts stopped but it crashed while loading the q4 demo. i had to hard reboot the pc

and i decided to run the above benchmark.

here are the voltages at the time of benchmarking

the temp reading is in taskbar.

can any one help me here what is the problem?

my rig :
p4 2.0 ghz on intel d845 gbv motherboard, 512 mb ram, samsung 40 gb 7200 rpm hdd, samsung cd rom, liteon dvd combo drive, samsung 763 dfx 17 inch crt monitor, ati radeon 9800 pro 256 mb grafix card, powersafe 450 w psu, pinnacle pctv pro, realtex lan card, modem.

os : win xp home sp2 with all patches, presently running nod32 trial, kerio personal fire wall, adaware, spybot, spyware blaster, system mechanic pro.

Doc... What are the temps you are getting on the card... Also... Did you tried doing a fresh install...

the 9800 dosent have temp sensor, and he did not do a fresh install

am guessing its either a driver conflict or glitch issue or insuffecient power as Quake4 freezes, if card is not working or have any problems, it shud give artifacts, but not freeze...

update :

as per crazy eddy`s advice i underclocked the card
core 277.56 from 378
memory 251.72 from 351

the artifacts have disappeared .

cpu temp is 56 and case temp is 48 with ac my pffice temp is right now 26

any thing more?
trying 3d mark as per blade`s suggestion in evening.
so first impression is overheating
second could be power at fault.

Could be a driver conflict. Clean the earlier drivers and install the latest ATi cats. Alternately i dont think its a issue with the psu since you said that you are now using a Powersafe 450w. Also run a round of 3dmark 05 and see if its artifacting. Download Ati tool which has a artifact tester in it and report back.

Edit: Was having a chat with eddy about your issue, and since you posted back it seems like the card is overheating. The ddr2 memory is also known for high heat output. I'd suggest cleaning your card, cabinet, also make sure you have proper airflow i.e. intake and exhaust and if possible attach a 80mm or 120mm fan to cool the fan.

earlier i had asus make geforce 4 mx 440 64 mb card.

i used driver cleaner to completely remove nvidia drivers
then ran system on onboard gfx for a day

and then i installed the ati catalyst 6.1

after first crash i uninstalled the catalyst and installed the omega drivers based on latest catalyst 6.2

edit :

used atitool to check artifacts
it showed no artifacts on underclocked card for 2 minutes.

then the moment i put the card on default speed it started artifacting.

^ He was using both rthdribl and Ati tool's artifact tester.

Medpal, case temps of 48C seem rather high in an A/C office. Perhaps you could try working on the case ventilation.

If it ran without artifacts while underclocking, could be overheating of the card here..

Unless the PSU is defective i dont think its a PSU issue as a a 450W Powersafe PSU is more then enough for your card..

Try cleaning your graphics card fan. Also try Rhtdribl keeping the casing open as this would prove if its a heating problem.

And if its a heat problem (& if you are comfortable doin this) try removing your heatsink on the GFX card and slapping some Artic silver & refitting it back. Could bring down the temps..

update 2 :

3DMark2005 score :
game tests : game score : 2926
GT1 - 13.4 fps
GT2 - 8.7 fps (butterfly in forest here it gave artifacts)
GT3 - 13.7 fps

CPU ests : CPU score : 2098

is this score ok?

atitools

3d show :

artifact lookout :

Ati tool is artifacting, the reason is probably heat. Try the tips alias posted and work on your case ventilation and cleaning the card fan.

Doc post the pic of the internals of the cabby... Maybe we can suggest you a Blowhole cutout over the Card for a 80 MM fan... Hope you already have an Intake and an exaust fan installed :)...

new update:

well i readjusted my examination table, put the cabby above and kept open the side case. directed the aircon air flow on to the pc.

effect the temps right now when i am typing is 26.

i redid the rthdrible it ran two full cycles and showed artifacts very less that earlier say about 2 %.

i also reran atitool it too showed the artifacts.

what could be the reason?

regarding pics i need digicam here may be tomorrow morning i can do it.
i have one intak fan installed i need one more exhaust fan directing airflow inside.

ps : while i checked the temps of heat spreaders of gfx card ram they were hot in morning, right now my whole cabby is cool you can say chilled still those heat spreaders are still hot.

Yup, since its artifacting its definately a heat problem here and not a driver or PSU issue..

Try opening your case and keeping a small table fan blowing on to your graphics card and then try running Ati's artifact tester. This can find out if temps can be brought down with better case cooling..

Most cases its actually dust in the fans and heatsink of the graphics cooler that brings cooling efficiency down. Can be solved by cleaning the fan and heatsink and ensuring that it is properly seated on the graphics card GPU.. (Repeated removal of card from slot and such could have reseated the heatsink..)

And last ensure that a good thermal paste is applied, particularly Artic Silver is applied in a smooth and even manner on the GPU. Works wonders, always brings down the temp from the normal thermal paste. (5'C - 8'C lower on my 6600GT now..:) )

Doc i read that you are planning to install an fan in exause... DO THAT ASAP... And it should through hot air out of cabby... I will also advise you to cut a blow hole on the side panel of the cabby just above the card and install an exaust fan there so that the hot air from the card is travels out from there... Will help in reducing the temps a lot... Also dont tru too much RTHDRIBL as of now cause high temps can damage the card permanently :)...

Hey doc, seems like your case ventilation is all screwed up.If its not too much trouble, can you post some pics of the case from inside, and the general area where its kept ?

I think that way we all can help you first get the basic case ventilation right, then we can address the cooling issue of a particular component. ;)

thanks all for your prompt help, i think its heat problem only.

case photos will post tomorrow as i do not have camera with me here right now

the case is placed in less ventilated area. ie: below the table so it could also be a problem.

will have to find out a solution but my case on table will take a lot of space and will look ugly too.

btw switch : i am not running benchies too much and i am giving airconditioning treatment to the pc right now :D :P

i am back after a gap.

was busy for 2/3 days,

here is the pic of my cabby was taken before i reapplied thermal paste to bothe gfx card and processor.

there is some dust in photograph which is cleared.

i am thinking of cutting a big round hole in side panel to facillitate more air circulation.

i have tied all the cables to drive bays so that motherboard area remains clear.

and any comments on sleeving of power cables should be redirected to switch :P

any thing more can i do?

tomorrow i am going to put the cabinet as i used to keep and see what has happend after i put in some efforts (read cleaning dust, reapplying thermal paste, adding an extra intake fan.
