HDD formatting queries

Nikhil

Explorer
I have 4 different partitions on my comp. I want to format one of them.

Can I backup everything, then just right click --> format??

This will erase everyhting on that partition. And if that partition in not the OS partition, then after formatting, I can start loading stuff on it all over again without any problems right??

Am I wrong??

Thanks guys :) I guess I will format the partition in whcich I have loaded all my games

And what if I want to format my OS drive?? What do I do then??

If you reinstall windows, it'll ask you wheter you want to format. OR, you could create an image, like ghost or trueimage, then format, then reinstall image.

BTW, why do you want to format?

Well, mainly coz I have been having quite a few problems on my comp.

CMR 2005, NFS Porsche, Quake 3, etc....

Quake 3 -- when I load a few select maps. the whole screen gets screwed up and returns to the desktop. The screen becomes very bright. But I am not able to get that sort of brightness through the manual settings.

And when I was using IE, some stupid toolbar installed itself and I am unable to get rid of it... in SAFE mode or otherwise.

And that trueimage thing, will it save me a whole XP reinstall??

Yup, trueimage makes exact image of your partition. Then you can format, boot from the trueimage cd you made earlier, and copy the image back to hdd.

But, if you're having so many problems, maybe it would be better to format and do a clean install of XP.

Do you want any information on True Image ? I use this program extensively and can give you any information you need to run it. I make daily backups with True Image and at least once a week I need to restore an image. You do not need to reinstall XP if you have a True Image backup. True Image can be run from a bootable CD and it can make images to another partition on same HDD or an external USB drive or CD/DVD blanks.

^^ would u recommend trueimage over ghost? Im on the verge of a format, so looking for a good backup s/w.

OH YES !!!! Once you see True Image working off the boot CD you will never go back to Ghost. The latest version of True Image v9.xx allows you to back up selected directories and files. You dont HAVE TO make a image of a full partition or drive if you dont want to. And of course you can also RESTORE only a file or a directory if that is necessary. True Image 9.xx is a real KILLER software.

There is a forum dedicated to True Image and a person from Acronis answers questions raised there.... GREAT SERVICE !!!

Making an image will backup the IE toolbar too. So unless you figure out how to remove the crud, you have no option other than reinstalling the OS.

Not meaning to hijack your thread Nikhil but since there's a discussion going on already,

Guys please recommend some softwares for data recovery as I still haven't recovered my data.

I've treid "Get Data Back" so far and no use, and other options ?

P.S.: Its an NTFS partition, only one has crashed all the others are fine.

I remember mentioning Active file Recovery and Acronis Disk Director, the programs recovered my lost/deleted partitions. Haven't you tried those yet??

I tried formatting my E drive but this is what I get.

I even restarted the computer. No use. I closed all running prgrams. I even disabled my LAN. I went to Task Manager ---> Processes and closed all processes being used by <username>.

Still no use.

What the heck do I do now??

boot inro recovery console thru WinXP setup disk and format there...

simpler method, Win98 bootable cd...format e: then convery to NTFS in windows
