there is no problems with the head phones as they work properly on other systems

the mother board has a Realtek ALC892 Audio chipset

he is using windows 7 32 Bit edition

Enter BIOS>pci/... settings>
There you might get a setting related to front panel audio. Select AC97 (i think HD-AUDIO is selected)

Respective ports as in the 3.5mm jack on the motherboard or the chassis? Ensure that he has plugged in the cables correctly from the chassis to the motherboard's front panel audio header and tinker around with the BIOS settings.

+1 @ above...was going to suggest the same

check whether if you are using the front ports, that the audio cable is plugged to the mobo in HD audio slot/AC 97 whatever it is.

If no sound is coming from the front panel then it has an easy solution .
Open realtek hd audio manager from the task bar , open settings , find and check disable front panel jack detection . Hope it helps .
Problem is with the chasis , many basic cabinets do not have front panel HD audio ports .
Mention if it works .
