hi everyone,
i want to decide between asus rt n16 router and cisco valet m10.
which one is better security wise and functionality wise.
asus is gigabit router and cisco is normal router, both are wifi n enabled.
regarding my usage,i have 2 laptops and one desktop.
desktop has gigabit ethernet and one laptop vaio is with wifi n and hp is with wifi g.
i want to share files between all three and share a multi function device (brother all in one)

asus has two usb ports.

my only dillema is which one is more secure and future proof?

i wont be upgrading for next couple of years.
current router i am changing after 4 yrs(its default bsnl type 4 router with 4 port ethernet and adsl modem)

which one do i choose?

i feel cisco can be more secure as compared to asus,
considering wifi security.

pls help me.

having gigabit ethernet and wifi n , it will be faster to share files (movies between two pc )

will it make this faster?

current setup is bottle necked at 10 mbps as shown in windows file copy window.

^ having Gigabit Ethernet will only help if you are transfering files from 1 LAN PC To another PC with 1000MBPS NIC, there is No Ethernet WiFi (yet) :) Max speed would be standard 56mbps i think, haven't read full specs of the routers.

But you can decide yourself this...If you are in future going to add more desktop to your home then it would be advisable to have 1Gbps port else its not required.

i am planning to add windows home server in future.

so thats why i put gigabit but one thing

my desktop is connected over gigabit.

laptop connected over wifi n(300 mbps)

what transfer speed i can expect over this set up?

i feel only bottle neck will be hdd speed.

now honestly speaking i am bored of usb 2 speed.

thanks for reply.

I finally bought buffalo wzr 300 nh.

High power.

Its gigabit router and having usb port which can do printer sharing or usb drive sharing.

Its wifi range is decent.

I will post review of it.

Asus router is fully DDWRT compatible .Buffalo is not fully compatible even though it ships with DDWRT. DDWRT is for routers based on Broadcom CPU's but Buffalo has Atheros CPU's.

My best best would be the Asus RT N16 over the Buffalo G300NH.

Dammit did not read that OP got Buffalo my bad.

No problem metal, I am happy with router and it's wifi range.

Getting full range in laptop at far off places in home and can successfully do skype calls which was impossible before.

To give you example., wifi signal happily penetrates one stair case and one concrete floor to give at least 65mbps connection speed.

and to be really honest, did not get time to dig in this router.

I do agree about cpu difference.

Can this still run on tomato??

@METALSPREE : do you have an asus n16? i recently purchased one from the us to replace my rock solid wrt54g ... might ping you if you have one!

Asus n16 is one mighty router but I did not buy asus because of rashi peripheral as support agent.

I was cent percent done with idea of asus router but a.s.s. drove me against.

IIRC Asus has opened some priority RMA centers where Rashi is no where involved. EDIT: Its only for Mobos ,not sure if its applicable for all products.
