I have a 160GB Seagate HDD and i cannot open any partition in windows directly by double clicking on it. Upon doing so, it'll throw an error like this

"C:\ is not a valid Win32 Application"

But even after a clean install of XP, still the issue exists. And yesterday, i bought a WD640GB HDD from one of TE member, plug it in and to my surprise, i am able to open the WD HDD partitions by double clicking and not the Seagate(160GB) one. Can anyone please tell me what exactly the issue is?

If it's virus then it sure also affects the new HDD too. Or is it a hardware issue?

1) Try to open the hard disk in another system, friends PC may be

2) Try reading the disk through a disk recovery tool

3) Load Hiren's boot CD and use the HDD tools there and see if they can identify

Try this and report back:
Open a cmd prompt.
At the prompt, enter the following commands:
attrib -h -r -s -a C:\Autorun.inf
del C:\Autorun.inf
attrib -h -r -s -a D:\Autorun.inf
del D:\Autorun.inf
etc.
(do this for every drive letter (C: D: E: etc) and do NOT open any drives with
Explorer until you're completed)

Or you can try this :

Open My Computer.

Step 1: Go to the address bar ( to the right corner of the address bar) and click to open the drop down menu. Then select the drive you want to open. After the drive opens, go to Tools -> Folder Options.

Step 2: A "Folder option" window will open now, click on the "View" Tab on the top, then select the option "Show hidden files and folders" and then uncheck this option "Hide Protected operating system files (recommended)". Click Apply/OK.

Step 3: Now you will see a file named "Autorun.inf" in your drive, delete this file.

Now for every drive repeat Steps 1 and 3. Step 2 is needed to be done only once. After that Restart your PC.

If all of this fails then try the method mentioned by Vivacious above :).

First find out if there is autorun.inf file in C partition. Open command console and type dir c:\*.inf /a .If there is one then follow the above steps...

If in the absence of such a file you are getting this error then you can make use of drive association fix. But I dont know exactly where the link is in this page, Sorry.

will try all these by today and post here. BTW Isn't it a virus? then why do we need to do these things like "go to command prompt and do this".

^^ Tried all solution but of no use. However i need to install Windows 7, so copied all data's to new HDD, delete the partitions and installed 7. Now there is no problem. :bleh:

now the issue is, i have my GTA EFLC save games backup and i replaced new ones with old save game backup, then the game is not loading. Can anyone tell me why this happens? Copied the whole R* games folder in App Data folderbut still no use. :S

Your pc is infected with some autorun virus, run hiren boot cd, start mini windows xp from there, next open your drive and delete anything suspicious. Alternately you can use some linux live CD

All viruses seldom require an antivirus to get them cleaned as you think.. The autorun viruses are just scripts which can be manually removed by removing suspicious entries from windows startup and the .inf file which is placed in the root partition. But there are some notorious autorun viruses which are very difficult to remove and they re-generate even if cleaned with AV since they get incorporated into the registry. These require O/s re-installation.

Apart from removing the inf file you have to use hijackthis to remove suspicious entries from windows startup. Try this if you get infected in future.

For your old saved games, did you check the mydocuments folder ?. Even if an iota of the saved game entry is missing, the game wont load properly. You can visit gamecopyworld.com and get saved game files or google it...
