Hi Guys,

I am planning to buy a filter for my DSLR.

Current Camera Specs:

Canon 550D with 18-55 lens kits

Planning to get the Canon 70-300mm F/4.0-5.6 IS USM lens

Need to buy CPL and UV filters

I could see the below from HOYA. Little confusing as all look kinda same to me.

My budget is around 4k-5k for both the filters combined.

HOYA Filter CPL + UV: Around 2k. This comes for 2.4k (1.6k + .8k) in Flipkart after 20% off

New 58mm HOYA Digital CPL & HMC UV Filter Set | eBay

Hoya PRO1 CPL+UV: around 5k

the below is 7k !!! just for the CPL

Hoya 58mm HD Digital Circular Polariser Filter - CPL | eBay

i am ok with other brands also as long as quality is not compromised.

Also, I am a beginner so don't know much about photography as of now.

UV filters are basically just to protect the front element of the glass. The do not add anything to the IQ but a low quality one would degrade the IQ. Hoya ones are pretty decent. The Pro ones are very slightly better, some may argue there is no noticeable difference.

Circular polarizing filters(CPL) filters are used to cut out reflections. They also give the sky a deeper/darker blue with the sacrifice of 1/2 stops of light(depending on how dark you go).

I say go for the second option of Hoya Pro CPL+UV, sounds good to me as it is a one time buy and 58mm sized ones can be used on other lenses like the Canon 50mm f1.4 also if you do get it in the future.

Yup. m getting the UV filter as a insurance policy for my Canon lenses:).

My question is is the PRO1 Hoya CPL significantly better than the 1st link which is priced at half?

Dude..since u said. Was was planning on getting a 50mm f1.8 prime @6k. f/1.4 is priced at 26k almost 5 times higher; is it worth the moolah for general landscapes and occasional closeups.

to be honest, not really. the difference in cost is way too much to justify when we talk in terms of an additional f-stop and IQ. The f1.4 does have a better build quality and a USM motor which is faster and more silent while focusing. I got a good deal on a used f1.4 which is why I took the plunge. I wouldn't advice the same if you were getting a new one cause I would've gone for the f1.8 myself if we're talking brand new.

+1, however the build quality of f1.8 is pathetic, but image quality is rock solid, and performs very well in low light conditions.

was just checking on the prime lens and realized that the 50mm 1.8 prime had a 52mm lens which would mean I would have buy a seperate UV filter for it also :(

You get the best IQ from going all naturale :P no filters. I have many manual and automatic lens with thread dia from 49 till 72. Cant afford filters for all of them :P

yup..Agree...I was plannning on getting 2-3 lenses so one UV filter for each:)

And I heard UV's are just for protecting ur lens and nothing much more:)

I got myself the Hoya HMC UV filter from flipkart for 670 bucks. The very next day they increased the price to 800 bucks. I wanted one more for the 55-250mm lens. But now I am not even using the kit lens so the UV filter is on the 55-250mm.

What I want to say here is that you'd use one lens more than the other so buy the filter for the most used one.

BTW for my 50mm prime I bought B+W filter. Costed me odd 2K :( But there is huge difference in build quality between the hoya and B+W.

Thanks Guys...

Just ordered the PRO1 kit itself with expedited shipping. Should come to me in 1 weeks time:)

The cost probably would have come close to the indian price but I wanted the PRO1 for the UV filter as well for its superior build quality which I was not able to find in flipkart:)

If a UV filter is coated the differences are minimal. A CPL and GND filter however makes a difference. I tried a generic GND filter and it gave a weird colour cast. I later upgraded to a B+W GND filter and what a difference it made ! The colours are fantastic and for some reason I prefer the photos with filter than without. So its kinda on my Sigma 10-20mm almost 90% of the time.

Though a lot of that is because I am too lazy to remove the filter and put it back in its case. :P
