look at the temperatures... bloody hell 94 degrees. .

Gainward 6600GT GOLDEN SAMPLE - on stock 500\900

:(is it going to die....??what do i do...help me !!:(

such high temps...are seen only in NFS carbon...that too just after 5-10 mins of gaming...other games like FIFA 07, FARCRY AND COD 2. dont reach upto such high temps..

also my side panel of the cabby is open ..do i need to close it for better cooling ??

what could be the reason for such high temps....??

suggest some way to save it from dying...and i dont have much cash to buy AS5 or some cooler and stuff...will adding a normal 80/120 mm fan near the card help...?

that and check if the fan on the heatsink is running freely, if ot then u need to oil the fan :P

oh and unless ur cabinet was designed in a wind tunnel, sidepanel open shud always give better temps...

just check if the hs fan on the card is running and also touch the heatsink and see if it feels like 94C hot and post back

Just a quick question, how old is your card?

If its a new one, prolly then using a coating of AS5 and reseating the heatsink would so wonders here with the temps..

If its an old one, & the temps were fine before.. then most probably u got a lot of dust or so in the card which is resulting in the card fan not running at optimum speeds and thus raising the card temps.. In such a case try for a clean up of the fan.

In either case if you have enough knowledge and willing to take a risk, try for an application of AS5 afte dismantling the card.. Brought my 6600GT card temps from 95'C to max 72-72 at load..
And yes, like Rave said keeping the cabinet open is the best method to giv better temps.. But be warned that always keeping the cabinet open in a dusty climate like India could clog up ur CPU & GPU fan over time and results in a very dusty cabinet..

Hehe... Are u kidding me??

If that hs fan is not running that card will like melt with a game like NFS:MW loaded and pixel shader options selected!! :P

The 6600GT's are meant to run hot .. my old XFX one did 90c easily running at 500/1000 ... 95c is a bit on the edge , but the core is capable of handling those temps ..

ohk ..a bit long post..but i had to reply to all of the queries..

the card is quiet old (second hand bought it around 10 months back from a TE member's frnd)

total around .. 2 years old ..and the temp. have shot up recently..before this it never crossed 80 on load that to after oc'in to 540/975

card also has 3 yrs warranty...so 1 yr is left i think..

i am using the RIVA TUNER 2.0 final statistics server to see the temps. in the game...

and how do i know after touching the card weather its really 94C..hmm ohk i can touch the HSF and its not so hot that my hand gets burnt but yeah it is quiet hot..cant touch it for more than 2 mins..really hot than my HDD's is all i can say...

and yeah there is a bit of dust on the HSF ,so i will remove the card today ,clean it and then install it again and then post back the temps.

the fan is running..@ normal speed i think.....waise how do i check fan speed of the card ?

i do not have lot of knowledge of dismantling the card and applying thermal paste...and nor do i have AS5 or the moolah to buy a tube...(i think its quiet expensive)....so mostly i will keep it as the last resort...and try other methods like cleaning and all....

thanx for all u r replies...maybe i will be able to bring down the temps. after cleaning the card.

and yeah RAVE what do u mean by this

check if the fan on the heatsink is running freely, if not then u need to oil the fan

whats oiling the fan ?

take it step by step...

clean the card of dust properly.
put a 80 mm fan in front of the hsf and see if it improves the temps.

well oiling a fan wud require you to put a drop of oil on the bearing..

although id recommend as puns suggested, clean the fan and heatsink throughly first and see if it helps

instead of Oil, try putting LIVON silky potion, a drop or 2 will do.

Yes i have been using it as a fan lube for long time & it works fantastic. Its non greasy, & doesn't drip but actually provides very good lubrication to sleeves of the fan bush.

I gotta 6600 gt pci-e too, and with nfs:mw running temps reach around 88c when the card is wrapped in dust. when its clean temps touch 82-84c

btw, even i use riva tuner to monitor the temps but those stats run in background rather than in game. How did you do it ?

ohk first i removed my 6600 GT from the cabby ..cleaned it with a brush..tried removing almost all da dust i could see on da HSF from outside .. and then thought of removing the HSF ..but had no knowledge of removing that 3 different(big) kinda push-up screws that attached the HSF to the board .....but with the help of dad i was able to remove it easily and then i cleaned all the dust even from inside ..i could see some silver kinda thing (thermal paste maybe)..around the 6600gt chip .:S ..didnt touch the area around the chip ...and then after cleaning it(dust and not the thermal paste) just attached the HSF back to the board without any extra thermal paste....and made sure that the chip was in contact with the heatsink...then i inserted the card back in the slot..and started my PC..

while playing NFS CARBON ..

i could see drop of almost 12-14 C in the temp. it dropped to 79-81 max..even after 45 mins of play...

so i was happy and thought that the temps. are normal now..

BUT........today again when i started my pc and played carbon...i saw that

the temps. are reaching around 85-87 max...!!!

ohk..i will explain it to u in short how i did it in riva tuner...

first start riva tuner > hardware monitoring> setup >then select the individual item(core temp/ambient temp etc). and click on setup> then select the tray icon and on screen display options..>> then click on the start sever .

now create a shortcut to the riva tuner statistics server on the desktop.

and whenever u play a game just start rivatuner and the stats. server in the tray....and start the game..

hope this works...and is helpful for u as well as other members who didnt know the on screen display settings of rivatuner

now that you have removed the hsf from the card , reattaching it means the contact of the thermal compound has gone ... you have to clean the core off the compound using good quality isopropanol and then apply as5.

when we said you should clean your card , it wasnt meant to remove your hsf ... just that remove visible dust on your card.

put a 80 mm fan directed on your card hsf to lower temps.

ohhh..i didnt knew it..but i did not touch the old layer of the thermal paste too..maybe there's still a bit of contact...i am a noob at all this...

also is it necessary to apply AS5 or any other good thermal paste will do da work ?...

yeah i have attached a extra 80 mm fan near it to lower the temperatures..

thanx everybody for the help....

that wasn't a good idea, when once u remove the heatsink, it SHOULD be cleaned off the old paste, & applied with new AS5 layer. The old paste w'd have easily absorbed minute dust particles, plus it is old, & stock.

I see u r in mumabi, its easy for u to buy AS5 there.

And faheem how did you remove those 3 pus up screws. I once tried to see if i could do the same, but couldnt get an idea.

Its best to apply another layer of thermal paste to be safe since you have removed the HSF..

Its not necessary to apply AS5 but its kinda the best and you may see a temp drop of 2-5'C over another thermal paste..
