Hi,

I have a athlon xp with a ASUS A7N266VM motherboard and 256 MB DDR Memory.

My PC was working smoothly since last 2 years without giving any problem. Now yesterday when I started my machine it was giving continious beep_beep_beep_beep just like engage tone in our telephone. It doesnt even boot up or show anything on the monitor.

I opened up the machine and removed everything harddisk, mouse, keyboard. Just started it on motherboard, ram and cpu and still it is giving those beeps !!! I then removed the ram and still the same problem. I dont have any other machine to test the ram.

Crazy !! I didnt even do anything and suddenly this problem.

Is the CPU dead or the motherboard or ram ?? How do I test it.

is the beep is faster than the faulty ram beeps ? if so ...

check the cmos batt ...

it just dont POST .... ur mobo is the faulty one ... i got this problem few days ago ... and the mobo was gone ..... repair charge was almost as the new one :S

it wont post. the screen is blank and the beeps are exactly similar to the engage tone of telephone. i dont have any other system to check the ram.

will the system post to defaults if the cmos battery is gone ?

Check out these common beeps :

No beep = system dead

Continuous beeps = Power supply

Repeating short beeps = Power supply

One short beep nothing on screen Video card failure

One short have video but still does not boot = Floppy

2 short beeps = config error most PS/2 systems

1 long 1 short = bad mobo

1 long 2 short = bad video card failure.

as well as a manufacturer dependent beep codeshttp://bioscentral.com/beepcodes/awardbeep.htm ,here for the following manufacturers

did you try to clean the slots with either a brush or vacuum cleaner. ALso clean the gold contacts of the ram, rub em clean with a cloth.

smps is ok - checked it. i told a shopkeeper about the problem and he says its the ram or motherboard. it cant be cpu.

So is it possible to use a 400mhz DDR RAM on a athlon xp with 266 fsb and asus k7n266-vm motherboard ???

DDR RAM is designed to automatically down-clock to the lower frequencies if needed. Hence no trouble in using higher rated memory with lower speed buses. One advantage too would be enabling you to specify tighter memory timings for the memory at those lower speeds.

I had the same prob in July, after the floods. Turned out, some of the caps on my mobo needed to be replaced ( the tops of the caps had puffed up, indicating they needed to be replaced ). The "hardware engineer" I called took the mobo to a "chip level repair shop". They replaced the caps etc. for just Rs 900/- . I don't know if this was a ok deal ( regarding the cost ), but my system is functioning perfectly since then.

I checked the motherboard at a local computer shop and he says that motherboard is faulty.

I think I will better buy a new motherboard with warrenty than getting it repaired. Any suggestions regarding motherboard. Need a nvidia chipset with onboard graphics (should be cheap).
