Hey guys ..

Ive my Sony Vaio which has a storage capacity of 200GB .. which is not quite enough for me as i have many other things to store .. well .. im thinking of buying an external HDD .. I was going through Ebay .. where i saw HDDs of 1TB available for 4.5-5.5ks .. are those worth the price ?? Or should i buy a HDD locally .. and ive also come through people telling me that 1TB HDDs go kaput after sometime of their usage.. is this true ?? Or should i buy a normal 500GB HDD ?? And please suggest some brands which have good A.S.S. .. and gurantee time ... and also their respective prices so that i dont get cheated ..!!

Cheers .. :hap2:

Re: Help needed .. Buying an Externam HDD

U can go for ebay but only from power sellers.

Better go for deals available through TE dealers or locally. U will get good price.

Regarding 1TB HDDs, whoever told you that they go kaput after sometime, give him a punch. Only seagate 7200.11 and some other series had this issues which were rectified with firmware update.

You can go for Seagate Freeagent Desk or Western Digital My Book 1TB.

I have recently got a WD 1TB and it has 2 years warranty. I think in India, this has 3 years warranty while the Seagate has 5 years warranty. Both have onsite warranty, so its just a matter of which one you like. :)

Yep, but ebay option is best with a 10 or 15% coupon
Ask our TE Dealers to list it there and buy using a coupon :P

Only WD has onsite warranty, Seagate is service center based - Accel, unless you are in some remote location

Re: Help needed .. Buying an Externam HDD

Ohh ok .. so how much do you think is the approximate price of the above HDDs ..?? And i also came to know these need different power source ?? is this true in any sense ??

Re: Help needed .. Buying an Externam HDD

Dont buy a 1TB ext HDD, instead get a casing from say transcend and HDD(of your choice) seperately and attach them together. This way you should get more warranty on HDD.

Re: Help needed .. Buying an Externam HDD

External HDD are of two types.

1. 3.5" - needs external power through an AC adapter [sold with the HDD].

2. 2.5" - portable, doesn't need extra power as it draws power from the USB port.

Generally 3.5" are cheaper and available in capacities of 1TB+.

Go through any online sites like www.deltapage.com to get an idea of the prices.

i dint get you here .. can you please explain ..

Re: Help needed .. Buying an Externam HDD

I think u are mistaken shaibalik...1 TB 2.5" hdd wont be for 4.5-5k....those must be 3.5" ones
...afaik...ull get 500gb 2.5" ones for that sort of prices (not fair-not fair)

What vivek is saying is that there are external hard discs which are basically companies putting hard discs in casing themselves and selling it as a complete package....usually the warranty on such external drives are 2-3 years...this is beacuse the comany percieves external hdd to bear more shocks
whereas if you buy a hdd itself, 2.5" or 3.5"..you can get 5 yrs warranty ...so you can put your own casing...but buy a good one for good transfer speeds...
BTW...if portability is an issue..then go for 2.5"...you can carry it in your pocket when you go to ur friends house and get movies from him....
if you dont intend to carry it around much go for 3.5" as you get double space for same price.

Re: Help needed .. Buying an Externam HDD

OK .. but i wanted something large so that i dont have to change it for sometime .. i mean 5-6 years .. and do these hdds have this much life ??

Re: Help needed .. Buying an Externam HDD

HDD shelf life cant be predicted,it may go kaput next day of your purchase or it may last for years

No one can say, expected life of HDD

its safe to have a back up very crucial and important data
