Help Required for target setup for Home: Repeaters, Wireless printer, Smart Devices

Guys, Planning to upgrade my home network since I have finally ordered a printer but don't wanna keep this in my room with my desktop:)

Current Setup:

I have a 3 Bedroom house and my hall is quite big (700 sqft). The Netgear G router is now places in my room (with my bsnl modem) and when I try to connect my PS3 (which is in my hall) it get a very weak signal.

Requirements:

I plan to connect the below devices to the network

2 iphone 4, 1 dell xcd 35, 2 xbox 360 slims, 1 PS3, 2 laptops, 1 desktop, 1 samsung tab, 1 printer

I also plan to use the repeater modem as for direct download (through USB hdd) during the nights and give rest to my desktop which has not been switched off since almost 2 years now:(

Also, need to stream moves from my desktop which is in my room to the xbox 360 which is in my hall.

Can I also fire a print command from my iphone and samsung tab?

Proposed Setup:

  1. Keep the same Modem
  2. Keep the existing Router (old Netgear router G series with no dd-wrt support)
  3. Invest in a new router with dd-wrt support and have it as a repeater. Connect the printer to this router. Also, use this for HDD downloading during nights

Please let me know if the above setup will work.

Also, please recommend me a good router which can be used as a repeater and will work in the above setup.

My budget is 3k but can stretch to 5k also. Need to have something which has a shelf life of 2 years without the need to upgrade

Please advice guys...the printer is arriving today and I can already picture my desk cluttered with printing papers and dad's stuff:(

Re: Help Required for target setup for Home: Repeaters, Wireless printer, Smart Devic

Get a DD WRT supported router with USB port like Asus N13U B1 (3k) or N16U Gigabit router 2 USb ports (6k).

Flash with Dd WRT and install torrent client for direct download to USB HDD.

Theres no good point in getting N16u as your current router is a G router with 100mbps LAN ports. Use the N13U as a repeater, or vice versa if your netgear router supports it.

TO print from the tab, install cloud print (free from android market), and you can trigger a print although it uses google account and internet. First you need to install google chrome in your printer connected machine and share the printer on cloud printer using the same google account.Or use similar apps like : https://market.android.com/details?id=com.dynamixsoftware.printershare&feature=search_result

Ive no idea about similar app on iphone though.

N13U has 3 yrs warranty, and in case of RMA, just reflash with Asus firmware before taking it to service center. It's an N300 router but using it as a repeater for your current G router makes it run a G device as i dont think your current router support WPA2.

Re: Help Required for target setup for Home: Repeaters, Wireless printer, Smart Devic

Hey, have you found out a solution?

I'm in a very similar situation as yours. Currently I have a Netgear wireless G router in my room and then I have another bedroom next to mine, then a huge hall and another 2 rooms after that. I get a weak signal in my hall and I need to extend it to the other rooms at the other end. I was thinking of adding a repeater in the hall so I would have access everywhere.

I was thinking of getting the Asus N13U and flashing DD-WRT and use it as a repeater. Wondering if I have any other options. Also I need to make sure my current router and the Asus N13U can communicate with WPA2 encryption.

You could also connect the printer to the USB port of the N13U and share it from there as well, since DD-WRT supports printer sharing. I'm not sure if the printer can be shared via the USB port while the router itself is working as a repeater. May work, but I've never tried it. I've only used printer sharing while the router was in AP mode on my Linksys E3000.
