I have used my MX518 for a short while and the surface of the mouses wheel has become very smooth and slippery - any one else had this problem ? What is the best and safest way to roughen up the wheels surface so that the fingers can get a good grip on it ?

I know that it is not recommended to use Alcohol on rubber parts like this as it can crack it up. I tried plain clean water with a cloth but it was good for a very short while and the surface became slippery agaiin :(

I have some old tape recorder's pinch roller cleaner - is that safe to use on the mouses rubber wheel ?

well it gets kinda oily with the dirt on the hand , so anything that can clean out oil is good , if possible open it up , take out jus the wheel n a lil vim would do good ; )

OPEN UP !!! :O ... NO NO !! ... the last Logitech mouse I opened had springs flying all over the room !! When I tried to put it together I swear there were enough parts for 2 mouses.

@kumar ... there is no dirt only oil from fingers. The rubber of the wheel has become very slippery :(

err...
This is really stupid but ...

Cut a strip of thin scotch tape or the 3M papery tape for medical dressings used nowadays.

Clean wheel well with earbud dipped in mild detergent solution aand repeat cleaning with plain water..

Stick it at the centre and let the wheel roll and keep sticking till u r at slight overlap, then cut and tap the end down.

Make sure you stick in direction opposite to your use of the wheel- the direction you use the most so that whene u scroll the wheel, u r not pulling at the upper end on the tape. :ashamed:

Never tried it as the MS wheel is ribbed a lil but was thinking of the same for the MX310 and might have to do it to my MX518 as you are having this issue. :ashamed:

Stick a thin strip of wilson tennis racket grips if you have any lying around , it's sweat resistant and gives a good grip. i've done this with my ergo 525.

methinks its oil/grease. soap+ water should clean it if you do it carefully :)

I've done it on my mouse.

i use that liquid soap we use to wash hands.

some googling got me this

Another easy way to clean the mouse is to get some bestine solvent from a local graphic arts or art supply store. Its normal use was to remove excess rubber cement from layouts, but it works great in this case as well. Just get a cloth or paper towel wet with the bestine and rub it liberally back and forth over the scroll ball and let the bestine dry (it does within seconds) and your all set.

or else

get a lint free cloth along with some alcohol also does wonders ;)

hope that helped

So many suggestions ... :S

I will try what I can and see if I can get the wheel back to its original rough feel.

What I was going to do was make small cuts on the wheel with a blade to roughen the surface so it would be easy to grip the wheel :) This to me seems to be an easy way to get a good grip on the wheel.

These days I am not in a condition to move around a lot so it is not possible for me to go out and buy some of the stuff you people have suggested :(

I think I will give the tape recorder pinch roller solution a shot and see if that helps. I remember that this solution used to keep the pinch rollers in tape decks soft and clean from grease - maybe it will do the trick. I will try it out first on an old Microsoft wheel mouse I have which too has this same problem with the wheel becoming smooth.

THANKS for all the suggestions...
