How Apple is scamming your privacy

Selling ads is what generates most of these companies' revenue so of course, they would want every detail from you so that you get tempting ads and you click on them. Idiots joke around saying "what are they going to steal from me, I got nothing haha" well that's why we are at this point where the public has to be on the mercy of the government to implement some restrictions. Apparently, Just don't buy their product is not an option for them.

The video is a bit misleading. Seen a few channels popping up recently making high quality but misleading videos for the views.

I like the analogy of East India Company, that’s how we may end up in coming years/decades.

I highly doubt any govt would step in, these big tech are only accelerating towards what govt wants, a surveillance state.

Apple generate most of their revenue through hardware sales, that is not to say they don't log user data, just that they make very little money from it compared to their other revenue sources.

Yes and thats where they are seeing that their revenue is now stagnating...and if they want to continue to attract stockholders they need to provide them year-on-year growth...which is why they have been angling to get into advertising space for past 3-4 years.

This image is from my iPad right now. Here is a proof that privacy is working. I get really un-related ads after I moved to iOS. I used to get lot of tech related ads (smartphones and what not). On the same site in my phone, I get some gold coin ads. I do not care if Apple takes my data. They do not have a social network and we have not seen them getting into really dark stuff like giving our data to governments and politidal parties.

It was a fun watch but reality is more nuanced though. Regarding CSAM and photo scanning, it's only done for photos stored on iCloud or if you manually enable child safety features. Other cloud providers do check for pirated or sexual content etc. too if they detect suspicious activity. And the other feature is opt-in anyways.

Apple does have a better track record for privacy than say Facebook or Google and offers better controls. The argument for targeted advertising has merit but I strongly believe I should have a choice to opt-out. It's naive and idealistic to assume that targeted advertising brings only good to companies and consumers alike. Dark patterns are common in the digital world and companies try to manipulate users to make certain choices or enforce consumption patterns. Tracking makes it easier to implement these patterns even if the data is anonymized.

When 'i ads' didn't work because it was pathetic in front of google and Facebook ads, Apple started playing privacy game. Apple ads are so bad that they keep on showing me the ad of an app which is already installed on my device. The privacy nautanki is to push Apple own ad network. The first step of this drama is to say 'privacy' 10 times. Step 2 is to give users an option to block tracking so that only Apple can track them. Step 3 is to relaunch Apple own ads network. Step 3 is currently going on. @desiibond bhai, you wrote " privacy" and then you said you don't care if Apple takes your data. What kind of privacy is it when you don't care if they take your data ?

Like I said, they do not have a social network and they are a hardware/software company first and foremost. Google and Facebook entirely depend on ads and user data for making money. It is not about who is collecting data, it is more about what they do about the data. We cannot stop these companies collecting data. At least we can stick to companies that do not give this data to whoever pays money.

What will Apple do even if they take my data? They certainly do not work with GoI the way Facebook works. At the max, they can push some suggestions in app store. This is the reason why I do not care about companies like Apple collecting data.

PS: This is my PoV in today’s world. If Apple starts doing stuff that Facebook and Google does, my preference will change.

A better video to explain what Apple is cooking right now (in regards to advertisements) would this video:

It's pretty mind-boggling at this point that some people are defending Apple and saying it's Apple and I trust them with my user data. Wait till they get a sniff of the revenue that they can harvest off their loyal fanbase and then it pretty much becomes their playground. Even internally, ads on premium products from Apple was not well-received. But, Cook being a logistics guy, having no idea of what user experience stands for, shot down any early internal resistance: https://appleinsider.com/articles/2...y-in-app-store-ads-shot-down-early-resistance

When you charge exorbitant amounts of money for your premium products, pushing ads is simply unacceptable. Even companies like Samsung and Xiaomi, who were once known for their ads-fested devices, dialed down on their approach. And the company we least expected to do it, does it. This move will definitely change the industry and more companies will now be pushing ads, now that Apple has set the stage.

I feel the current recession in tech will make companies, especially like Apple who like to keep their shareholders happy over their customers, make more desperate to create additional revenue streams.

It's just sad, people are normalising ads these days, now that their favourite company is doing it. Goes to show how low our standards have stooped!

Right now, I mean right this moment, right now, Apple does not sell data to agencies and governments. I am not sure why some people get all hyper on rumours that some are doing for click-bait and views. Coming to these ads in App Store, do you know how many times we all open App Store in a week? Compare that to how many times we open a browser or social media app. Personalised ads in App Store is okay as I do not have to go through thousands of games to know if there is a game that suits my taste. This is okay as long as the data collected is strictly used for recommendations within the store. What I do not want is to take my data and give it to agencies and governments so that they can spam me with calls/ads/messages. I hope you understand the difference between these two.

Companies like Samsung and Xiaomi went too far with ads and they had to dial it down. One cannot put Lock Screen and notification bar ads and get away with it. About 7-8 years ago, there was this launcher (forgot its name). UI was amazing and animations were great. It got traction but then it died. Reason is that they started pushing ads in notification bar and some of these ads were borderline-porn. We reviewed it and put it in the review that ads are main negative. They asked us to remove that -ve from review and we did not budge. That launcher died a very sad death. This is what greed is. Even nova launcher collects certain data but it never resorted to this level of privacy breach and they are still alive and kicking.

In what world are you living? Ads were there in iOS for years. The different now is that we can block tracking. Ads come at same place even now but they are just random and generic. I see more lingerie ads now than ever because ’my data’ is not shared.

Pretty much this really. If Apple does start doing these things, people's preferences will change.

Some people find it easier to label others as fanatics just for exercising their right to choose. Quite hypocritical when they claim to be pro-choice.

I am definitely not okay with any ads on even a 30k samsung device. I have no ads on my Samsung device. I don't want any ads on a 50-60-100k + device for sure

I don't care one bit if an ad is targeted or not. I don't want ads. Btw there is host level adblocking on android too but my device doesn't have any ads, don't know what ads you are seeing on Samsung flagship phones

Are you sure that your Samsung phone does not have ads? There are ads in browser, ads in play store, ads in youtube. I have seen friends say that they get ads about product in browser/Facebook when they chatted in WhatsApp. This is what scares me. This is the data that goes to agencies to spam us.

I am quite sure that I dont have any ads...because any sign of an ad or annoying notification...I straightaway disable that apps notifications or remove any apps that work only with ads...

I dont use the Samsung browser ofcourse I use firefox, no ads on youtube as I am using premium account...you can sideload revanced too if you don't want to pay for premium but hate ads

There is no getting around play store ads ...there are alternate play stores you can easily switch to...but I don't bother with that

You must be living in a world of your own when you think personalised ads are good. Apple was showing pesky gambling ads beside unrelated apps on the App Store. The problem got so much out of hand that they had to pause gambling ads altogether: https://www.macrumors.com/2022/10/26/app-store-gambling-ads-complaints/

Just think of its impact on a teenager or a child, or worse a gambling addict who is trying to be sober.

It's been well over 2-3 years that Samsung and Xiaomi devices have gotten so much better in terms of the ads situation. But, no thanks to Apple, I feel the days will come back.

Yes, that's why iAd failed. Now they are bringing ads not only on the App store, but also on the News and Stocks apps. Even people with News+ subscription are seeing ads. That's borderline shameful for the largest tech company in the world. Wait till they start their ad infestation in the weather app as well (Dark Sky had to die for this crap)!

Yesterday, I had reset wife’s k20 pro and during setup, opted not to enable glance screen. Today out of the blue, this is the Lock Screen. Just saying to those who think Mi has improved. This is downright pathetic.

You have to use an Android phone yourself to know how the ads situation is. With Android you get option to system wide block ads with just a private DNS server that takes 5 seconds to setup. And anyone can do it.

And the funny thing is, Samsung's own internet browser has the highest ads, tracking and privacy-related settings I have seen on any mobile browser. Goes to show that the industry was on the right track, until Apple arrived.

@AINDRASIS_GUPTA if you think this is better than App Store ads, you win. Apple is evil.

I have oneplus 8 and k20 pro at home. Hating a brand blindly is worse than loving a brand blindly. Assuming that others have no idea about the topic makes one the worst kind in a discussion.
