hey man tripod costs are depending on their size the stating gropup is around a 6 inch at can go from 600 - 1k approx they are quite decent for still cameras

u have a handicam damn it so the above answer is useless a handicam will be much more i approx it to be a start of around 2.5k to 3k

If the camera you are going to put on the tripod is light than it is important to have a heavy tripod to avoid camera shake. A heavy camera can be used safely on lighter tripods as the weight of the camersa will press down on the legs and keep them steady. I use one of those 6 inch tripods and it is very steady as being small the centre of gravity with that tripod is very low and the legs dont vibrate at all. The larger the tripod the more of vibrations you are liable to get.

^^ Tough to tell you from here, as I said you gotta go to a store and decide what's best.

@ Eazy - I'd once seen a Gitzo for $2000 :O, couldn't find the link...

Some of the high end tripods are made for really heavy 35mm and 70mm Movie cameras used to shoot feature films these have a lot of extra features like motorised fluid drive heads - you can imagine how much these would cost :O When I did a bit of photography in the 1970's I had a Linhof tripod which is a very good brand. I bought the tripod second hand for around 5k. This tripod was stolen from my house when we got the house painted in year 2000 :(
