I am thinking of setting up LAN connection with a friend living quite close to my house.
Around 500 - 700 Mtr max
any Idea how much will it cost and what all will I need to set it up and is it possible for us to connect
:)

500 - 700 Mtr... half a kilometer... Maybe u need some kind of cable other than CAT5...

Or u can use repeters... Dont know much about that though...

CAT5 will support upto 100 or 120 Mtrs...

If you can afford wireless networking then that will be great hassle free environment.
Josh can help you regarding prizes and how to?
If you wanna add in some kinda security then i can help..

Wireless will be expensive I prefer a cheap one!

Just for gaming! and data transfer

Broadband in my area is not always very stable plus its quite expensive!

Let me know if you can let me know on the price

Well, Youll have to use like 100m of CAT5 and 7 Switches in the middle, to get it working. And thatll cost a bomb.

Wireless is the way to go. But im not sure if itll suppost 700m :S.

Take the cables to the roof top and use a rubber ball to throw the cables across next bldg. I better suggest to go wireless bit expensive but hasslefree.

You'd need to boost the signal using a large antenna. However the point is that even with an antenna, don't expect a large bandwidth. You might end up getting not more than 100KB/s if you are luck. 802.11b/g is not designed for long range. The protocol itself causes problems if you try to stretch the distance. Using a normal wired ethernet network is a dumb idea. Your only viable option that will work is fiber but that'll cost a bomb.

Hi!
Whats the maximum lenght will the cable support!
As to come to think of, I dont think it will be 500 but much less!

CAT5 or CAT 6 cables can not support more than 100 Mtrs. One option is to have a LAN Extender. But you will need one pair of copper wire between the two houses. DAX, D-Link all make LAN Extenders, cost will be around 10-15 k for a pair.

Or you will need to attach hubs after every 100 mtrs break. 1 mtr of CAT5 cost 10 bucks and 1 hub cost 600 bucks so in all total cost will be like 10k IMO a waste...

How about you both buying the same net?
Like iGate or sumthing.

Youd be on LAN Automattically, if youve bought it from the same provider.

Well if you can get some sort of internet connection then you can create a VPN using Hamachi and share it just like you were on LAN. You will be limited by your connection speeds tho :(

And the wireless might work. A lot of DIY enthusiasts are getting it done for cheap and with good transfer rates. Should be doable with some time and effort.

Raghu.

Buy a WiFi Router/Access Point. Good ones like DLink come around 3.5K with outdoor range of 400 meters. That is still not good enough for you. So purchase a AP which has external antenna pin. Design a good antenna and try to use it. You will find lots of articles on how to design an antenna.
Or search for ready made external antenna's with range of 1000mts.

WiFi PCI cards retail around 1200 to 1800. : Range 400 mts.

So go for WiFi Solution. Keep the AP in a house some what in between. I think it should work. Or design the external antenna.

Hi!

Also I would like to know from Josh suggestion

How many computer can I connect using the connection suggestion by josh

Cos I am now thinking of connection more then 2 computers.

Also if I use the antena will the angle of elivation and depression be in sinc with each other as I think there will be couple of building/trees between our houses.

Theoritically u can connect 254 comps. 1 will be gateway to your PC connected to net with net sharing enabled. I dont know how many u can connect practically because WiFi is like hub. Like in hub you cant get facilities and speeds like switch.
If you are thinking of connecting more than 2 comps no problems. If u decide to use antenna then set up the antenna with AP some where in between your two houses so that you will have good signal strength. Since the speed decrease with signal.

Also if you use the AP indoors the range is divided by 4. So better set up the antenna where u can have visible contact.
