hi folks i need ur suggestions regarding turning on ma laptop for long time i mean for 4-5 days or more than tat continiously, reason is tat i used to turn on ma comp for months together since i have moved down to chennai i dont have ma desktop but have a laptop and got airtel 256Kbps connection sterday i used dowload movies, games a lot on ma desktop as i had same connection so how safe is it turn ma laptop in the same way is it gonna bust ma laptop

PS: i download only movies will not be using for ntn else will close the screen and kepp it aside i did give a try sterday kept it on for 6-7hrs the laptop was so god damn heated i had to shut it down immediately...

mine is a gateway laptop with AMD turion proc and 1 GB RAM is there any other way i can cool ma laptop any accessories cant get ma desktop for the next 2 months :@

so by leaving the screen opened and getting a laptop coller will ma system be safe and where can i get notebook cooler and whats the price of it ?? and one more thing the heatsink to ma laptop is on the left hand side and not at the bottom

i dont mind spending money on a real good cooler coz the temp in chennai is gonna go really high maybe up 40 deg Celcius so i dont want to screw ma laptop and later regretting :( and i saw in tomsguide that The Coolermaster Coolpad is more efficient in terms of heat dissipation and battery saving. The big aluminum platform sinks heat from the bottom of the notepad, while two fans blow away the hot air, thus cooling down the unit.

u dont need that cooler dude...chill :P (pun intended) just make sure u leave the screen open n use it on a hard surface where it leaves space for air to circulate below the lappy too. U ll b fine.

if u wanna feel doubly safe, just use some temp monitor to check ur temps. that ll make u relax :)

I had a compaq 6102AU with AMD turion 64x2 and geforce go6150. I ran it for almost an year continuously. after 6 months or so, the wifi stopped working. I took it to the service and they said they replaced the dvd drive and motherboard.

I used to restart the machine very rarely, maybe once in a week or so. It was used to download movies and stuff on torrents.

btw, I purchased extended warranty after that incident. but the laptop works just fine.

IMO, a problem might be with the adapter i.e. it has no cooling so it gets heated a bit. Keeping it in contact with the ground seems to reduce this problem.

Also, the amount of charge the battery can store seems to diminish. My laptop is already giving me a warning that the battery can only store 97% of charge and that I should get a new one ;). But I don't worry about it.

errr.....EVERY manufacturer documents the fact in battery care section that IF using for longer periods on AC power, DISCONNECT the battery :) so long as u do that ur batt will b ok ;) get a UPS if u want to keep it on n have managed shutdowns when power goes :D:)

I've been running a T21- thinkpad for several yrs non-stop, screen is open.

Disconnecting the battery may or may not be a good idea. If you have reasonably reliable power with maybe a 1-2hr UPS backup then you can remove the battery. Even then if the UPS is fairly intelligent it can hibernate the pc once the UPS battery reached a limit you designate so there technically is no real need to have the laptop's internal battery attached.

This is something i wish i did as now have dead battery and am wondering if i can ever get a replacement for it :(

Even i use a laptop for downloadding and all..
Its almost On 24 hrs...It does get hot sometimes and everything including even browsing harddisks seem sluggish..
but it dissappears in some time..

I simply charge to 100% and disconnect the power stays for 5hrs or more on my 9 cell battery..with the lid down and screen off...
Incase i feel its getting too hot, i jus put a smaller thing like a compass box or something which elevates the laptop, and exposes a fare bit of the rear area...This way its a bit less hotter...

Any one know of any soft or OS thats made exclusively for downloading, liks jus switch on the screen, proc and hdd while downloading, and the rest is off..
It might save some power!!!

thanks a lot folks to day i have turned on ma laptop for 12 hrs at a stretch i have kept it on a small platform above the ground level, i have used 2 wood peices so that the laptop is bit high from ground level i can feel the difference its not as heated as it was sterday .:)

Every battery whether Li-Ion or else, has a maximum of charge/discharge cycles and hence I feel the earlier suggestion of disconnecting the battery will be a better option in the scenario of continuous usage. (more so, when a costly 9 cell one is concerned)

Dont use wooden pieces dude hthey might slip and the lappy might fall (assuming they are small pieces).

If you are adventerous, just Feviquick 4 erasers to the four corners on the undersite. That should give sufficient elevation without the danger of slipping off the supports.

Or, get something like theese:
Bluelounge - Cool Feet

nah...i guess the wooden supports will do him fine esp if they arent too big so the lappy is say <1inch from the table top or watever surface being used :) u ve got ur own readymade stand there ;) thats all u really need. that much high even if it slips no worries :) njoi :D

thanks a lot folks i did manage to fix rubber under the laptop ,but havent fevi quicked them but have placed them under it ma lappy it is doing good.

And Kumar u have given me the link where can get the stuff in India.

and can i get the cool feet thru KMD, hey KMD are u listening .
