hi guys

was planning to buy a dell 13 inch laptop....but without vista as i will be using primary Linux on that....(may be windows xp in virtual machine.....)

talked to customer care about not wanting to have windows vista preinstalled.....they said no options.....you have to buy it with Vista only....
does anybody know how to manage to get a laptop without vista...

have heard stories of people in US giving windows back by not accepting EULA ( but that will surely be cumbersome....)

is there any way to get it without vista from Dell only....

could please explain a lil bit more.....

i work with Dell BPO and i tried to the max to get the Dell vostro 1510 without Vista just DOS ,spoke my program manager he said tat its impossible coz dell doesn't allow it ,it doesnt ship with DOS anymore :@

^^ Interesting info there mate.....this may not work in india but the suggestions for "handling" customer support were useful. I will try to get this refund from these people when I buy a lappy which I soon will......does dell have a toll free CC number ?

Edit: looks like this is the number : 1800-425-4026 (As given on dell.co.in)

Its pathetic I tell you. We just have to live with it, till one fine day somebody sues Dell and MS.

Sue???? if you dont like it, dont buy it, its as simple as that.

Its not simple decision to put some other OS on the laptop/desktop. They have to change their business process, train their support staff and many more things.

just compared dell vostro (with dos ) with dell inspiron (with vista )....

roughly telling 15.4 inches, 2.0 GHz, 800 FSB, 160 GB, 2 GB RAM, DVD writer, 6 cell battery, 3 yr complete coverage,

vostro costs around 41 K while inspiron about 44 K (rounded off )...

so it means inspiron has 2 MP webcam, Dell remote control, and windows vista basic for 3 k extra...

thats surprising....

so guys, what do u say now...? seems like inspiron is better of a deal even with vista.....

its not plain simple....its the biggest joke of democracy in the modern world....

how do you allow open competition in such a windows world....companies are crippling the user by not allowing any choice.....windows is not the end of computing experience.....

Europeans are bringing some laws or something to ban manufacturers from selling windows only....every govt. must look into this issue ?

issue is of grave importance....you may not feel it if you have just used windows only in your life....
