How to develop facebook apps

I'm a 2nd year CSE student have basic knowledge and understanding of C++ and Java. I can also write small amounts of HTML. I want to learn how to code and develop facebook applications during my summer break(which is currently on). Can someone point me in the right direction of how much PHP I need to know. Also, what exactly is FBMLmand how should I be using it.

If someone could point me to the right books I'd be grateful.

Thanks. It seems I need to be very fluent in html, javascript, css and php before I can even think of making a basic application. Will be reading up about these technologies. Does anybody have some book suggestions?
