how to host searchable photo repository on private LAN. FTP does not allow search

Dear Friends,
Being administrator of my private LAN (not connected to internet) , I have a FTP image repository . Users do not get to see thumbnails (limitation of FTP) and hence have to download complete event folder on to local disk to select a few photos. I am on windows domain. Pse suggest remedy.

Switch to http web server and use an open source image viewing software that can run from web server.
FTP is only for uploading/ downloading. Very limited in functionality.

If its a Private LAN (I assume in same premises and mostly connected by wire/wifi) then why not use UNC paths of the shares directly?
This way you can view the thumbnails also...

network shares are not authorised view security policies..anyways , will give it a trial ..thanks a lot[DOUBLEPOST=1402883502][/DOUBLEPOST]
