Hi guys,
My friend has an office having 25 computers. The main server has hathway 256Kb connection and using switches only,it is shared by other 24 computers.
Now my friend wants to prioritize bandwidths and speeds given to each and every secondary computers.
Can he do that by installing some software on his server? If so which?Or does he have to buy 4-port routers to achieve that?

I have two lines one 512 1:1 leased line and 256 kbps broadband line in my company and being a linux advanced user I use squid, HTB+iptables on linux

if that's too much for u then invest in

Cyberoam:

What is HTB?

Anyway, you probably already use IPtables, I guess you can also look into tc (Traffic control).

Hierarchical Token Bucket packet scheduler..u can refer to lartc.org doc for traffic shaping ..traffic shaping is very complex but got it working for atleast my setup after lotsa head breaking...sheesh

another goodresource is:
Linux Traffic Control and HTB

So if he installs cyberoam on his server then there is no need of the routers right.

Also are there no freeware softwares for the same?

Also cant he achieve the same goal by using 4-port routers?

Also the computers have winxp in them and no linux.

Windows? Well, how does he do the routing currently? Just simple ICS? I don't know of any freeware traffic shaping tools for Windows.

Here is a commercial utility that I found on google (not very expensive, abt $30)

Traffic Shaper for Windows

I don't think netlimiter is a network prioritization tool. At least, I never noticed that. It was more of a single host solution.

Netlimiter website has screenshots of the software which shows that it can limit bandwidth usage for each network connection individually... But I am not sure about the priority aspect..

Can somebody put more light...!!!

netlimiter is more of a single user solution
its for setting priority for individual apps...
and also u can share the bb speed withn the network...
u can just limit the speed to say 2kb per system or something like that

that u can do wit even ccproxy..

just go to NetLimiter - The Ultimate Bandwidth Shaper
and see the features..
