How to test old HDD (can require replacement anytime). Also suggest 2 TB Sata hdd 7200 RPM or large capacity.

Hello,
I have 3 hdd
1x nvme ssd (1 month old) - 480 gb
1 x kingston sata ssd (7+ years old) - 500 gb
1 x WD sata hdd (8+ years old) - 1 Tb

1 tb hdd takes lot of time to copy/paste data to itself.

How can I test the old drives (any tools/utilities) , if any hdd might need replacement?

Please also suggest 2 TB HDD, (will be used as archive for photos/videos/tools/digital licenses etc and accessed from TV using vlc media player.
I need cmr or smr?

I have a 1 tb cloud backup which will be soon overloaded next year with more photos/videos.

Thank you.

For hard disk test try Crystal Disk Info or HD Tune.
And for hard disk suggestion, you can check Seagate.
I bought Seagate Backup Plus in 2016 which is still working fine. They have 3 years replacement warranty.

Thanks,
Installed HD Tune and stuck on this screen, can someone guide how to use correct options to test/check the HDD for issues ?

Use the health tab and error scan tab to see if there is any issue showing up. You need to scan the hdd using error scan tab. Also select proper hdd using the hdd selection drop down menu at the top.

When source and destination device is the same, speed will be lower compared to two different devices.
Further, even on a perfect HDD, speed varies depending on:
  • the physical location the data is stored on the magnetic disk (faster towards edge, slower towards center)
  • disk fragmentation
So speed by itself is a bad indicator of HDD health. However if it takes more than a moment to open, say a small text file, it is on the way to its grave. Usually it is accompanied by clicking noises

Looks like faulty SATA port or cable.
i doubt this as motherboard is new (2 weeks old)
Using new sata cables which came along.

Came across this as well
Here are complete details of both HDD.
Kingston 480 GB Sata SSD
This is WD 1 TB details:

I just said based on slow R/W speed and that error in HD Tune. Even a brand new cable or motherboard can have defect.

That article also includes this statement:
This parameter can be regarded as an indicator of an aging drive with potential electromechanical problems
And also the reason which I mentioned in the above reply.
