A friend of mine wants one for the most basic of uses. Projects, MS word, powerpoint, internet. Of course when she has this, she'll also use it for music, movies, etc...

Need to order urgently.

this would be an overkill for a very very basic laptop range.. i would prefer an ACER that costs around 20k :)
btw nikhil : before you post .. nice post count ^^

ask her to save another 8-10K and get something with a dual core (T2XXX) insteak of a T5xxx/t7xxx

99% of users will not notice any difference between these proccies

And if you are using that on the move, get a 14" laptop instead. 15" and above become bulky and less portable.

+1. 15inchers look like suitcases :| no i'm not joking.

if form factor is what u looking for .. then go for EEEPC or MSI Wind or something similar.. basic operation is what is needed right?

Can you post some Acer configs and approx prices?

Any other brands apart from Acer at that low cost?

She will not be upgrading this config for a very long time. So, I dont want her to feel after a year or so that she should have got a better config.

^picked up acer for my cousin,a month ago, similar config for 32K.Unfortunately I can't remember the model.

Since usage is mainly for paint, word, surf, etc. Why not consider a AMD based one?costs much lesser(30K or below)

The E is around 16-17k only :P

But just make sure shes comfy with the 7" small screen on the E.

Ele wait for Asus to launch one of the bigger models...or get a Wind from the US :ohyeah: ~ 22k (10" screen, 1Gb RAM, 80Gb HDD, Xp :))

Hey nikhil, this config is pretty cool..and wil prolly be good for a long time as u need it..Jus see the config yourself, and check for the onboard graphics..

Also, get the price down a bit , its a bit over the the top for a config lik this..
Consider a 9cell battery, graphics card(seeing her future need), wifi N..

I am looking at a HCL lappy for around 32 or so.

She doesnt need Core 2 Duo.

She said apart from the regular stuff, she'll be installing two softwares and using them.

EVIEWS and STAPA.

Any idea of these? Will they run fast enough on a Pentium Dual Core 2300 + 1 GB RAM?

i bought a compaq lappy for my mom in chennai based on a c2d 5450 and 1gb ram for 34k all inclusive.rest of the config same as the dell u posted above.

check that out .. looks kinda boring all black , but does the job .

Lenovo 3000 G410 for about 22k including bag and other goodies. intel celeron 1.83, 80 GB, 512 MB RAM, DVD writer. a 'basic' laptop would be this. unless you're living in monte carlo.

RAM is dirt cheap these days , better to go with a 2gb stick. HCL is a good choice , their lappy's have a very good build quality plus there customer service rocks. I guess a basic HCL laptop with a daul core , 2gb ram , 160gb hdd and a dvd writer should cost you no more then 25k-28k.

^^^ But then u r bluffmaster, how can we believe u ??

kidding :)

Anywayz is the HCL real good in build quality n CC ? I had an otherwise experience but maybe that could be my lone case on my perception.

I can vouch for HCL build quality. actually it doesnt look expensive, but very reliable. have punched the keyboard of lappy hard any times due to frustration, still everything is working as if new :)
