HTC Desire HD Ownership Review

Guys after a long time sticking out with the fruity team, I finally switched over to the geek squad. :P
Suffice to say this is my first review on TE & I will try to keep it informative and honest.

INTRO

After using the apple iphone 3G (bought officially in India thru Airtel) for the past almost 3 years, I was in the market looking for a new premium smartphone. I was considering iOS, WP7 as well as Android devices. I was looking for a smartphone that would be fast, feel great in hand & have a slick UI. Being used to the iphone I was expecting the user experience to be atleast at par if not better. After a lot of researching & taking user opinions I decided to try my luck with Android. The primary reason being, that both iOS & WP7 were too restrictive for my liking. I mean after buying a 30kish phone you still couldnt trully multitask or transfer files through bluetooth!! I mean come on man....you need to jailbreak to enable features which come enabled by default in other phones?

After a lot of brain-wrecking I decide to to go with the Desire HD. It had very good reviews with only its major shortcoming being a so-so battery life. But I was used to a pathetic battery backup wid my iphone so it was not a dealbreaker for me. Moreover I anyway charge my phone in the afternoon so again no issues. So I put an order for the Desire HD on e-bay @ 25,750.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The first time I took out the phone, I was very impressed. The phone has that perfect chunky, metallic, substantial build quality of a high end phone. Also due to the metal body it was very cool to touch too. The screen is huge and very bright with very good clour reproduction. People tend to prefer the Super saturated screen of the Galaxy S but IMO the desire HD screen is sharper. The screen may not have the great viewing angles of the Iphone 4 but standalone its a superb unit.

One drawback is that the touch sensitive matrix underneath the glass is visible to the naked eye if the angle of incident light is right. It detracts a little bit coz in whitish backgrounds, it tends to give off effect that there are dust particles under the screen. This can be compensated somewhat by increasing the brightness of the screen, but still its a bit of a downer.

USABILITY

I can just say only one thing, The phone is FAST. However hard I tried I cudnt slow it down. The only one occasion that I managed to freeze the phone for a couple of seconds was when I deliberately opened 15 video files at once!!!. Every touch, every gesture is accurately registered. The HTC Sense UI is absolutely sublime. Its fast, slick & adds a lot of niceties to the vanilla Android. The additional features like syncing contacts from social networking sites, great keyboard, system wide search, excellent copy-paste support, extensive customization options, etc are all terrifically done by the HTC Sense UI. HTC has also added a recommended apps in the form of HTC Likes. Moreover HTC Hubs is the place to download all kinds of personalization stuff for your phone. HTCsense.com website is a cloud based service for locating & managing your phone. Its a bit buggy but the idea is great. The solid hardware selection shows in the way the phone operates. Every widget, every app opens without delays. The phone always remains responsive no matter what.

MULTIMEDIA

The Desire HD comes with an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash. The camera captures a lot of details & accurate colours but has trouble focussing. When compared with it rivals like N8 & Iphone4 & Galaxy S, the HTC has a better camera than the galaxy S, but cannot come near N8's camera fidelity. Although the HTC beats the iphone4 in most cases but there are some conditions when Iphone 4's photos come out better. The desire HD can record 720p videos and these are fine as long as you dont pan the phone around quickly.

Music is very well handled by the Desire HD with a coverflow type UI. The desire HD has far more audio options like Dolby Mobile & SRS compared to its rivals. Personally I feel the Desire HD's music quality is much more rounded than its nearest rival- the apple iphone. Where the iphone lacks bass desire HD has ample of it. Though the volume cud have been a bit louder overall.

As a a video player the Desire HD excels. With the large screen & audio enhancements the desire HD is the perfect portable movie player. The visuals in the movies come out fine. The desire can play 720p movies with ease although xvid format movies tend to cause it some trouble. However most h.264 & x.264 movies play sublimely.

INTERNET

The desire HD is a dream phone in terms of connectivity & browsing. Every webpage is displayed crisply & properly in the built in webkit browser. The large 4.3" screen helping tremendously is displaying large websites. The added support of flash 10.1 in froyo means all the websites rich in embedded flash content is displayed properly unlike the iphone. Overall the web experience of the desire HD cannot be faulted at.

BATTERY LIFE & CALL QUALITY

Contrary to what is being said, I made my Desire HD last for more than a day with heavy usage which included- 1. all the apps on auto sync, 2. running more than 10 background apps, 3. wifi usage of about a couple of hours, 4. constant gprs usage, 5. a few calls & smss

If a litle bit of care is taken & the display is set to auto brightness, the desire HD will easily last for more than a day.

The voices clarity of the desire HD during calls is good although the voices sound a bit too "android" like and less human. Also due to absence of any noise cancellation audio quality in noisy environments is bit of a letdown. I would say in this respect the iphone is definitely ahead.

Perfect review brother. The phone really is a treat. I tried so hard not to buy the Dell Streak and buy this one instead but later gave in for the bigger screen size. Had to compromise on usability, though.

This one instead is best combination.

Try Defender juice to increase the battery life. My Dell Streak now gives me 48 hrs easily with moderate usage. Also rooting the phone to add few CPU profiles helps a lot. I keep my phone underclocked at 245MHz when locked/idle. Saves a lot of juice and still powerful enough to continue with the update operations.

thnx bro for ur feedback...m really happy to go wid this phone....was tempted to buy the dell venue almost but decided against it....very glad wid my decision... plan on rooting my phone but after a little while...will definitely try defender juice as u suggested...made a little modification with android sdk to enable all downloaded apps to install on sd card by default :P

Nice review done brother. Appreciated.

Thinking of getting a new phone soon. Will be going wither with this or with galaxy S II. Hope, the latter release by 2nd week of March otherwise i'll go with this for sure.

The major thing i am concerned about is the battery life. But after going through your review, i beleive i wont be disappointed with DHD.

i got the same, the phone is too huge i realize............ :@

the battery ........... :ashamed:

7/10 for the phone!

I got it yesterday morning, rooted it by evening. Its easy go to xda, grab the one click tools, install sdk, jdk, htc sync and radio s-off, eng s-off, flash away!

@rockstar...m on airtel unlimited data plan courtesy of my company :D

@a_k_s_h_a_y yea d phone is on the bigger side but i guess some people like me believe in d "size does matter" mantra :P battery life for me is better than iphone 3G any day

Nice review there. But I have a question. Isn't the WiFi receiver really poor. I put my Desire HD next to my Nokia 5800 and tried connecting to my home WiFi. The Nokia showed me full strength, and the HD showed me a zero point very poor signal. Eventually it could not connect. At another spot closer to the WiFi router, I tried again, and this time too the HD could only show a 2 pt signal as compared to the full strength on the Nokia.

Another point - the GSM antenna. In a closed room, the HD's signal was again poorer compared to the Nokia's. Is this a common phenomenon or have I got a defective piece?

compared to the n8 or any nokia phones for that matter, desire HD or iphone will always have poorer reception in GSM. this is something u just have to live with. Personally the desires wifi is good enough & i havent had any problems like u mentioned...btw are u able to see the grid like pattern of the touch matrix on the display on whitish backgrounds & by tilting the phone??

Yes, I did notice them the first time the phone powered up. But that is not too much of a distraction. The display looks mind blowing while reading text.

I have serious doubts on the WiFi though. And that is even without the 'death grip'. For the record, the WiFi antenna is alongside the battery slot

I'd say add pictures to the review. I know you added all of them to the last. But add in between your review accordingly would be a good idea.

@krishnandu i will try to add more pics & update the post accordingly.,,:)

@agantuk....i havent had ne issues wid the wifi connectivity even using the death grip....but one thing i have noticed is that compared to my iphone the DHD does show a bit less wifi signal strength....but surprisingly my lappy also shows the same signal strength as the DHD...may be its some kind of algorithm issues...like how apple changed the GSM signal strength bars with the 4.1 upgrade....will investiate more tho

Great review bro
a silly question though
the only drawback for the DHD is the battery because of which i am biased towards the defy
will i be missing out on too much or can i live with it
i am asking that because i haven't used any smartphone before and i am waiting for the prices to drop
also the defy can be overclocked and has some great reviews

@dark prince...dude if u plan on overclocking the defy u lose its battery life, moreover i think the htc sense Ui is the best ui for any android phone. I have used a friend's droid 2 & i feel motorola's motoblur ui 4 android is not upto scratch.....also i think defy is not on 2.2....so in short if u planning to buy ur first smartphone go for the Desire HD or else if budget is ur concern pick up the desire....u wont regret it

Thanks for the info dude
Cash is not the constraint.i am just waiting for the MWC effects to step in which might result in the price drop
the DHD is an excellent phone period.
but then i dont want to regret later cos of its battery life thats why the silly question
also about the defy OS,there are froyo updates(unofficial) for it since it is somewhat on the same lines of milestone
after that review of yours i am craving to get my hands on this baby
my use is gonna be heavy internet and music along with videos/movies.
that can be done on defy as well
the only thing to hold me back from buying this monster is the bad battery
charging everyday at night is not a problem for me
i just dont want to carry an extra battery
so please help me out

u dont need to carry a spare battery wid u....puttin it at charge at nite will suffice...to be honest why this phone is berated so much for battery life is beyond me...if u r buying a high end phone u have to live with iffy battery life...to ease ur apprehensions tho i can give u a little example...yesterday my phone lasted for more than 9 hours with non-stop browsing, & downloading using wifi...the entire time all background apps were set to autosync too....to me this is very reasonable battery life considering the phone's specs...

One last annoying question
if your watching movies for hours together, how long will the battery last?
As in on full charge for how many hours can the battery last?
i am asking this cos i dont know if wifi eats up more battery or not
