Hi All...
I have a real big pblm...
Most of my ext HDDs, other than MyBooks, are on generic ext cases.
So sometime when booting up they wont be recognised. It will show
a small dialog box saying to format. If i connect the HDD to my PC
via SATA then it works ok. I guess the case is the culprit here.
So i need another ext storage solution, similar to a NAS.
I have abt 5 HDDs of abt 5 TB to be shared. My idea is to get a
very low end Proccy+Mobo+Ram with a low capacity OS drive and
install WHS in it, making it headless and connected to my router.
Then connect the 5 HDD's via SATA. and share them. And map them to my PC's
and laptops. Is this idea good or bad?
Or is FreeNAS on a CF card is a better choice?. Anyone know whats the boot time
will be for this thing?
And the hardware.
I am looking for a cheap Proccy+Mobo+Ram, but most mobos have
very low number of SATA ports, so is getting a SATA expansion card
good. Any models to recommend and prices?
And is using a Atom board with a PCI SATA card good enough?.
As it got only 2 SATA ports. My OS option is FreeNAS on a CF card for this.
Any potential pit falls? Or any better ideas?
These HDD's will be storing videos, HD and non HD...
so the trasnfer speeds should be good enough.
And i have a genric 450w PSU. I was plannign to use it with this.
It got 4 Molex power and 1 PCIe power, will use with SATA power coneverters.
Is this good? or which one is good enough for me.. with room for expansion.
Any advices will be appreciated.
