I'm looking at a 22,000 Lenovo 300 G410 laptop for purchase.

Specs:
Intel Celeron M 1.86 Ghz
80 GB HDD
512 MB Ram
14 inch screen
DVD Writer (Dual Layer)
WiFi
FreeDOS

My budget is 23,000 and I'll be using Ubuntu as the only OS. I don't mind the config as I plan to use the laptop for 1 to 1.5 years and then go for a MacBook. I need it for simple home use (word processor, a bit of music, a bit of movies, internet, no gaming)

Please advise.

PS: I would not mind a dual-core laptop if it costs the same as Celeron now in 30 day's time, but not if it costs Rs. 25,000 and above.

i wouldn't really want to go 4 a 2nd hand laptop. i was only wondering if prices of amd/intel dual cores would drop in the next 30 days and come to the 22k price. or if i can get one for ...say... 23k?

exactly my requirements(except, I might be buying a higher end notebook instead of a mac) , i am a bit cash strapped at the moment, i paid a visit to the lenovo showroom on kr road today, the dude did not have this model on display, but i checked out the screen/build quality on the one with c2d(same model, diff proc).. what does the te junta say? any other model/brand? no carry case needed, size/weight no issues.. battery backup no issues..

All i wd like to say abt Lenovo is ... LOUSY SERVICE after purchase..

the dvd drive of the lappy went kaput , plus the net like thingy near the speakers started to fade and looked bad.. all this within a month ....and my frnd had a hard time getting things fixed.

Hmmm..... Apparently many feel the same way. So I've turned my options to Compaq Presario C733TU. Same specs, but 15 inch screen a 2K more expensive at nearly Rs. 24,000 (Compaq Presario C733TU Notebook PC (KB151PA) specifications - HP Home & Home Office products)

Oh, and could anyone tell me if the Intel Celeron M 1.86 Ghz is 64-bit?

I have a Celeron 1.6 Ghz processor on a Compaq laptop and its working great. I found the build quality of Compaq to be excellent and wouldn't mind recommending Compaq to anyone.

ok... i'm dropping lenovo. will try to get something in dual core and within 25K. but that might not be possible. so will stick with a compaq. seems like a better deal even if more expensive.

Need urgent help, is Lenovo that bad? I'm cool if it lasts for 1.5yrs under normal usage, plus I dont plan to lug it around much, so not much rough use.. The service at the KR Road, exclusive Lenovo showroom had good ambience and they were generally nice when I went to enquire.. Also, incase I wish to add something like an mx5021 few months down the line, the onboard audio on either lenovo/compaq suffice? or anything has to be done about it?

well, honestly, I'm not sure. from a spec-price ratio it's great. and 14" mean it can be lugged around. But what has caused me concerns is some posts and one review abt how the colour comes off with use. but remember that the model listed above does not have drivers for XP. i'm planning to use Ubuntu anyways so that doesn't bother me, but might bother u. comparable models from compaq costs at least 2k more. (all prices Nehru Place, New delhi)

well i wud suggest u to go for Compaq instead of tht Lenovo...i hav seen many having hell lot of prblm wid der lenovo lappy,n there after sale service is pathetic to say the least!!Dell,Hp,Sony(Damn expensive) dez r gud brands!! :hap2:

Hey guys! A BIG thank you for all your suggestions. I finally bought a Compaq v733 AU for 26,000.

Specs:
AMD Athlon64 X2 1.9 GHz
120 GB HDD
512 MB DDR2 667 RAM
DVD writer (dual layer)
Nvidia graphics card (have to find out which one it is)
15 inch screen
FreeDOS

My only grouse is that I haven't been able to install ubuntu in it.
