Indoor event photography

As a favour to a friend I will be the "official" photographer at his wife's dance class event. I figured that this is as good a time as any to buy some stuff

What would I need for getting good results at this event?

I have a D90, + i figure my 50mm f/1.8 is a decent enough portriat lens

Would a old MF 135mm be better for indoor portrait photography, and if so , where in Fort would i find a store that sells old nikon lenses

Would I necessairly need a external flash, and if so, where fort would I get used flashes (like a used YN 460).

I have a el-cheapo tripod, which i know is not the best, but functional enough for me at the moment.

I am not aiming to go "Pro" here, just looking to "level up"

Any and all help appreciated

I think a MF lens would be too much of a headache to use. Try to get a Nikon 55-200mm instead and bump up the ISO or use a flash in bounced mode.

I figured as much the 55-200 would be the way to go, I was just hoping someone would suggest an epic (and dirt cheap) MF lens that I could but alongwith the 55-200.

What about the flash? are used flashes worth going for (if so where)? Or would a home-made flash diffusor or bouncer suffice?

Focusing with MF lens could be a pain especially if you are covering an event.IMO,MF lenses can be best utilized for landscapes,Portraits.

I use SB600 coupled with my D90 and bounce it off ceiling for indoor photography.

If you are right in front near the stage, 50 mm will be enough by itself. Use a hotshoe mounted flash and bounce off the ceiling, thats it. I wont recommend a 55-200 since it is very slow focusing.

MF - NOOOOoooooooooooooooooo

EDIT : find out about the stage lighting before the event, maybe you wont need flash at all. Thats what I find is true most of the time.
