INK JET PRINTER - cost effective solution in India

Respected techies (gurus) and dear friends (like me)...

First of all as a non computer person, i would like to thank everyone here for being there always in answering my questions relating to purchasing of any equipments; or any other queries for that matter (which may be a matter of seconds for techies but hell to me)...

I take once again the privilege and request to help solve one of my more problem...

A LITTLE BACKGROUND:

I am from finance (i know i have said that many time) and a voracious reader and basically read from many many books / journals whenever my job requires any new thing to be done...like presently i am going to implement SAP Fico for my company...so i am reading about it daily...

I generally prefer ebooks and online documents (both free and paid)...

PROBLEM:

Since I am too tired with my desk job; I really cannot sit at computers when i return at home or in morning as it leads invariably to backaches...

I have dot matrix printer LX epson 300 but probem is that say any document is 500 pages...so i cannot invest time in printing 500 pages through that slow dot matrix printer (apart from bad quality)...

WHAT I DESIRE:

One person known to me have suggested that ink jet printer is quite cheap (i am talking about cost per page) IF WE do refilling of the same at home by purchasing the ink directly from the market...he has said me that it comes to 20-30 paise per page.....

MY QUESTION:

Q1. Is it really true that if we start using Inkjet printer with self ink filling method; its really very cost effective...????

Q2. Has anyone personally did that at home / office...????

Q3. Any one having any better idea / suggestion for my problem...????

Again thanks man for taking time to read my post and then possibly reply considering my particular situation.

running costs of any inkjet printer is very high, unless u wish to use non-original inks.. like from refills or other local manufacturers. then, u'll lose warranty on ur printer. but inkjet printers cost less initially (to buy).

Laser printers on the other hand cost more (initially) but their running cost is very less. Inkjet printers are good only if u are printing occasioanally, say 20-30 pages..

Now to answer ur Questions:

1. Yes, but u may lose warranty on ur printer as most manufacturers strictly recommend using original inks. Also, ur print quality may go down a lot if the re-filling is not done properly. In some printers, it may damage the head, thereby needing you to replace the complete printer unit. (just a risk)

2. Nope. I usually buy the cheaper Amkette inks for my Epson printer. cheap and gets the job done.

3. U cud workout a deal with a DTP center and bargain for each print copy. some DTPs here charge as less as Re.1/- per page.. which is quite economical IMO.

Let me add: you lose your warranty only if the error was due to the refilled cartridge.
Therefore, in the cas of problems, simply remove the refilled cartridge, take it to the service centre, and deny all knowledge of the mere existence of refilling

heh, ditto.
but if you plan to do lots of printing then its better you invest 9.5K in basic laser.
Its faster, you can refill toner too. So its cheaper. It has heavy duty cycle. It will last longer than inkjet.
If you plan to print more than 300-400 pages a month its better to invest in laserjet.

My answer wud be the same as above.....it basically depends on how much u want to print per day/month

It seems u print a lot of pages said thru ur original post.....a laser printer wud be a better option than an inkjet(though a bit costlier)

I have been using an inkjet HP 5500 series...look up here from the company http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/18972-238444-410635-12019-f51-311254.html which is a 4 in 1....quite good

Yes the warranty part is true ....ull lose it if the company comes 2 know ur not using he recommended ink but AFAIK no one in my close circle has had any prblems with refilled ink.....still if u cud extend ur budget(and bargaining power) for some bucks extra of a inkjet ull get a laser

BTW whats ur budget...u didnt mention it!!!

A HP toner will last you for 2500 pages. Refill cost is anywhere between Rs. 800-1000.
You get better and faster printouts compared to inkjet.

If you wanna print lots and save most money get a laser. Also make sure its a Xerox not an HP. Xerox has the lowest cost of running in the business. It has ability to use higher capacity toner cartridges and the supplies are also much more reasonably priced than HP. If you must have an inkjet, try and look for one with larger ink tanks. Those are hard to find these days... Unless you have an older series inkjet printer with 30ml tanks, inkjets are a total waste of money. I'm hanging on to my 7 year old inkjet cos its running costs are way lower than currently available inkjets. Current inkjets have 9ml ink tanks and run out of ink in no time. I'm against refilling as it kills the printer sooner or later. I havent refilled my printer cartridges even once (always bought originals) and the printer has lasted me 7 years already and still works perfectly fine. (This is an HP Deskjet 670C btw... one of the first printers to offer individual black and color cartridges)
