Laptops Inspiron 1525 : Partition Limit ?

Hello again,

I just got my Dell Insipiron 1525. AFAIK almost all the dells come with default partitions of OS (C drive) and the Recovery partition of 10GB. According to my need, i needed 4 partition off my 160GB hdd. I went ahead with the clean installation of Windows Vista Home Premium with the original DVD that i got with the laptop.
Everything went fine until I came to a point where we have to create and select the partitions. I went ahead & deleted all the partitions (2 partitions) and started to create the first partition of 35.6 GB, then the 2nd and the 3rd were done nicely, but when the last unallocated space of more than 40 gigs was left, it did not give me any option to create, delete or extend the partition. All i was left with is to go ahead with the installation on the first partition created.
Finally the installation was done. Every driver was loaded fine. Then i thought about the disk management which is inbuilt in all the Windows OSs.
The last unallocated partition was shown in black with stripes on it as if it were dead :( .. When i right clicked on it, all the options were greyed out and nothing could be done. I just couldnt sacrifice the 40Gigs, I right clicked on the 3rd partition and had to extend that with the unallocated space of 40 GB making that 76 GB and totalled to 3 partitions
Are there any limits to partitions on any laptops or am i doing something wrong.. Help meow!
sorry about the size of the post :ashamed: ... Suggestions are most welcome :)
Regards,
Anish

you probably created all your partitions as primary partitions.

afaik you need to create 1 extended partition comprising of your last 76 odd gigs and divide that into a couple of logical partitions.

+1 thats exactly it :D

u need to create 1 primary, then 1 extended containing all the rest of the space. THEN u create the 3 partitions u need INSIDE the extended partition :)

U can do that now also, provided u dont have any data on those paritions. Delete the ones other than the main primary using disk management, then create 1 big extended partition on there. Then split it as required :)

:O holy beegees!!.. thats what i forgot to mention .. i saw every partition as primary I made from the Vista installation.. I ignored that completely :ashamed: .. reps added to you both ... thanks !!!

@ techie : cant add reps to you for some reason .. its asking me to spread some rep around before i could rep u :S
