Installing Windows Xp on an External drive:Possible ?

I have got Win 7 64-bit Home Edition pre installed on my laptop.

The problem is I can't run most of applications on Windows 7.
So I want to switch back to Xp now.hyeah:
I am not interested to format the HDD or for any other alteration in my Laptop OS/HDD.

Is there any way to install a copy of xp on external HDD and booting up the laptop from external HDD when I need ??

I have installed XP on external HDD once & the only problem I faced was with, it didn't support paging.

Not used for long time but for normal use it was fine.
