I have 2 HDD in external USB2 cases one is a 2.5" and one a regular Hitachi 80gb 3.5". Are you asking about this ?? I use them solely for backups. USB2 cases are available all over Lamington Road - look at TechTree they often review USB2 external cases - prices run from 700 - 2500.

A few months ago i had bought one 3.5" ide / USB 2.0 box from Lamington road (window shopping really) for Rs.1100.

tested it but have never used it since.
BTW. it somewhat works with Cd discs too. provided you do not change the disc. if you change the disc then you have to power off and power on the device. (it comes with its own seperate power adaptor)

perhaps a bios update of the device will rectify this ......:S

the portable hard disk in my sig is exactly that...
a 80 gb ide hard disk.. converted to a usb hard disk using a ide-usb convertor(case) got it for 650 bucks... from computer selection.. its unbranded..but it does the work for me... and its pretty reliable.. too...
its great for back-up..

Thx guys for the quick replies.

Want to buy this for a friend, Didnt know that such a converter exists for ide hdd. Will get it tomorow.

Can I use it to boot my computer from it? I have a Gigabyte GA7N400L motherboard. Do I need to select some option in the BIOS? Is there a major performance hit with USB 2.0?

First YES big performance drop....

HDD to HDD 52mb/s
HDD to same 3.5" HDD in USB2 case 24MB/s
HDD to 2.5" HDD 11MB/s

I have my 2.5" USB2 drive setup with FAT32 and it is Bootable to Win98SE. I have made a menu system on the drive which on startup puts a menu on screen (in DOS) with options to boot to Win98SE or to make various types Ghost images. Your Mother Board has to support booting off USB2 drives - Read the Manual - mostly all new boards have this support via an option in the BIOS.

A thing to be careful about - I took my 2.5" HDD to a friends place to transfer some stuff and that guys computer put a virus onto my drive !! Luckily I always scan my drives after taking them out and so I caught the virus.

GET A CASE WITH A FAN BUILT IN. Specially if it is for a 3.5" drive. Otherwise the drive will FRY !!!

I read that cases that support both USB2 and Firewire are NOT good they have problems. Avoid these.

This is one of the cases I bought from Prime for around 2k and it has now been hijacked by a friend - he liked it so he took it... brushed aluminium finish... NICE !!

the transcend storejet 2.5" casing is also awesome....~22mBps transfer rates with a 5400rpm 60gb hdd

BUT .... compare their prices to buying a seperate case and HDD !!! Can you change drives in their cases ?
