Storage Solutions Internal SATA HDD to External

I'm planning to buy an Internal HDD which a SATA one. I plan to use it with this to connect to my laptop - DealExtreme: $27.19 USB+eSATA Vertical Dock with One Touch Backup for 2.5"/3.5" SATA HDD

My laptop does not have a eSATA port. Will I get good speed if I connect using USB.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to HDDs

USB is far slower than SATA. It has a max datarate of 60 MByte/s ( 480 MBit/s) . While SATA supports speeds from 1.5 GBit/s ( 187 MByte/s ) to 3 GBit/s ( 375 MByte/s ). But most harddisks don't have the capability to max out these datarates .

But your connectivity will be limited to 60 MByte/s through USB 2.0.
