iPod Shuffle not being recognised on XP wtih SP2

Posting this on behalf of my friend.

1. He has 2 installs of XP - one is with no Service Packs. The other is a version of XP fully patched upto SP2.
2. Recently his onboard USB ports stopped working, so he got a PCI card with USB ports.
3. Now, when he plugs in his iPod shuffle into the PCI card's USB ports , he gets a "Cant recognise USB device " error on the XP with SP2. His unpatched version of XP however recognises the iPod fine.
4. I'm not too sure about the config , since this is a distant friend of mine - just know its a P4 1.8Ghz , mobo based on the via chipset. However the same XP w/ SP2 setup on another computer recognises the iPod shuffle fine again.

What could possibly be wrong?

check the data cables...my cable got busted, even tho the device was recognised in windows, i got corrupted data....

Which data cables? Like I said, it works fine on the SAME PC with unpatched version of the OS. One could conclude the O/S is at fault - however the same SP2 patched O/S installed on another PC works fine.

are u directly plugging it in or are u using an extension cable...a friend of mine had the same problem with a maxtor external HDD on his old pIII. But it worked fine after directly plugging into the usb and not using the extension cable :S

I dont think there's any extension cable as such, just the iPod shuffle's cable.

AFAIK, there are no specific m/b USB drivers to be installed for Via boards on SP2. For pre-SP2, you had to install the USB 2.0 patch to get USB 2.0 working. SP2 has the newer USB 2.0 version drivers. Nothing to install there, but will check on that again.
