33 rupees is the baseline set for poverty in city. If you spend above 33 you're not poor and no subsidy for you.

Let's say a person gets little more than 33. Is it possible to live in that amount in city?
According to planning commission of our dear Congress government its possible. Raj Babbar says you get huge plate of rice in 5 bucks in Mumbai even today. Some other Delhi politico chap says to eat at langar where its free. :S

Suppose a poor guy has to travel by train to work, he won't have anything left from those 33 rupees since even a platform ticket is 5-7rupees now. Train ticket would cost upwards of 25 bucks for a return ticket most probably.

What do you guys feel about this poverty baseline set by the govt?

I once tried to live like that and hence just drank water whole day and at night I hunted for a place where I could get cheapest food possible. After sometime found myself at an open dhaba sharing space with labours and rickshaw wallas. I order following (keep in mind I didn't have anything whole day save for water) :
3 chapati
half plate dal
And the bill was 22/-. 15 for dal and 6 rs for chapati.
So if a person even travels by foot to his/her workplace and have 2 meals in a day with minimum squares, I really cant think this is possible.

And our netas sit in ac cars and gallop the bottled water for the amount in which a person can eat easily per day. Shame on them for making such japes. I sometime wonder does a post of politician makes a man/woman loose his/her wits or people without wits are choosen as leaders in India.

Wasn't poverty line lowered to 28Rs per day in cities and 22Rs per day in villages ?

I am not questioning on our leader's credentials but still i would like to know how do they plan on budgeting food/water/clothes etc i.e the basic necessities of life .

Ps- Probably going to vote this elections for the first time and for me MODI is secular enough .

I think its pretty possible, since govt is providing Rice for 2 Rupee per kg, pulse for Rs. 3 per kg, and wheat also for Rs. 3 per kg :)

Firstly, the figure is for those who will cook their own food and eat it, and that too basic stuff - rice, dal, roti, sabzi etc. However, this is in reality not possible for a single person to do, say a labourer. He will be out by 7AM and come back by 8PM, totally exhausted.

As for our 'great' netas, they live in a life of luxury. They blame others for something like the disaster in Uttarakhand, than trying to resolve it. They make statements without thinking. And if someone points it out, like this restaurant did, they try to shut them down. When the opposing party tries to help in any disaster, they term that as trying to milk it for political gains. Ditto for any person who makes satirical carictures, they shut down his blog and jail him. When it comes to taxation, they try to do double taxation, as they dont want to share the revenue.

Whenever I hear/read such outrageous stupidity, I get furious, but then I realize that this is what power does to people. And don't forget the great quote from Einstein about stupidity.

Among roti-kapda-makan , with Rs33/day, it 'might' be possible to feed on very low standard food. Thats too in a perfect world.
But its impossible to arrange the other two.

I think even those land grabbed by goons which they sell to poor people to build huts costs around 40-50k just for 100 or less sq ft. So even hutment dwellers are above poverty line now?
They should just say there are no poor in India after decreasing amount yo 1 rupee a day per person.

with a gas cylinder costing upwards of 1K / month, that is not possible unless , one decides to live by eating uncooked foodgrains.

They provide, but it never reaches the intended. I remember as a child, we had ration cards. The a** who ran the shop, would never open it. And 99% of the commodities went in "black".

Here we don't have any such problem :), there's not much black-marketing. Even i had got APL card, allowing me to get rice @ 12, pulse @ 14, however quality is little bit sub-standard , and all our supply comes from farmhouse so no worry :D

Bro govt. has also taken care of that :), they do provide kerosene oil @ Rs.14-15 per litre, i don't remember the exact details. Also, for a poor, 1 full subsidized cylinder costing 450-500, will be more than enough for 3-4 months for cooking food for 3-4 people.

It's us only , who needs 3-4 cylinder, to make 3 time breakfast, lunch and dinner including 5-6 different items, 5-6 coffee a day and so on.

The saddest part of the story is that, all this things are being subsidized by central government, but some state government which are being held by opposition take all this basic things lite, and neither promote it nor support it, they think it will give central govt. more vote. While, some state govt. like that of Chhattisgarh, provide addition 1-2 rupee subsidy from their pocket and say "HURRY we are providing for cheap vote us".

I think the upcoming Food Bill will surely help many poor to get proper 2 time food :)

I think these people come up with such ridiculous numbers just so that can squeeze out of a catch 22 situation.

They must have thought let's give food grains to poor for 5 bucks or less so we can do well in next election. Then they thought of counting poor and the actual numbers were far greater than they expected. So to stay within budget (after getting their share) they decided on a figure which leaves majority of people out of the scheme.
