Graphic Cards Is it worth buying a RIG with 5970

quickdraw

Disciple
I have been a happy mac user since 3 years. Didnt have to touch a PC but sadly now as I had to use it anyways I dont mind having a PC at home. And although I love games on my PS3 they do look so much better on the PC. So does a really nice raid core i7 5970 coolermaster rig make sense right now? I mean honestly guys how long do you think the 5970 would last for me? The reason I switched to (and still very much love) mac's is because I got sick and tired of spending on absurd hardware. And is 7 really that good? Remember I am coming from a Mac so I expect a lot.

Thanks for your inputs, you could suggest some configs as well as I dont have any idea. Budget around a lakh excluding display.

Processor: Intel Core i7 920 - 14.5k

Gigabyte EX58-UD5 - 16.1k

RAM: Corsair TR3X2G-1600 XMS3 C9 6GB Kit - 8.6k

GPU: ATI HD5870 2GB GDDR5 - 27k

HDD: Seagate 1TB SATAII 7200.12 series- 3.8k

Cabinet: LanCool DragonLord PC-K62 - 6.9k

SMPS: Corsair TX 750 - 7.8k

Keyboard: Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 - .9k

Mouse: Microsoft Intelli Explorer 3.0 - 1.8k

Mouse Pad: SteelSeries QcK Solo - 1.4k

Total - 88.6k

LGA 1366(X58) has better upgradability options than LGA 1156.

You can upgrade to Core i9 in X58 socket

i7 920 much better VFM in terms of upgradability bro

Think about it

i7 920 much better than i5 750

ATI 5970 will last you till 2012 but its not worth it for 1920x1080 resolution . It will be an overkill

Its useless convincing a MAC user that Windows 7 is really good. So i won't even try doing that

Please follow Renegade's format for asking help ?

If you want a rig suggestion post in PC peripherals with the proper format for asking suggestions

Not worth IMO, HD 5870 is more than enough for anyone to game in Full HD unless you are opting for 30" monitors which cost more than card alone. Get a HD 5870 and CF it later according to your needs. I'm sure you won't need another HD 5870 in future coz card itself will serve you long, Good luck !

People are facing issues getting the 5970 clocks to the original 5870 speeds. It is a bit neutered, specially regarding the memory speed. So it is not a genuine 2x5870 single PCB/dual core.

Though if someone wants to go for Xfire, its a good option. Internally it will Xfire, and give nice performance. You keep one PCI.E slot free, if on a x16 x8 board.

OP: Judging by your post, you are expecting an uber high end PC for your needs. Now, I assume that you know your hardware, its just that you are not in touch with the current scenario. If my assumption is right, then you must be knowing that there is no such thing as futureproof hardware. I dont know how people can claim that such hardware will last you for so much time or this wont. Actually nobody can tell what H/W will last how many years. The most sensible thing to do when you are building a PC is to decide a budget (that you did) and look for parts that give you the maximum performance TODAY and HOPE that it will last you the longest judging by the current scene.

ATI 58xx are the first generation DX11 cards. They give excellent DX 10 performance and good DX11 performance. Bear in mind there is exactly one DX 11 game right now. But we shd see DX 11 games coming in Q1 2010 and shd be flooded with em by Q3 2010.

When I look at the benchmarks:
Dirt 2 benchmarks - DX 9 vs. DX 11 - Update: Radeon HD 5970 results - Colin McRae Dirt 2, DirectX 9 vs. DirectX 11, Test, Benchmark - PC Games Hardware

I notice that the minimum card you want to go with is a 5970 if you want full eye candy at FUll HD resolution.
For the rest of the rig, follow what Anubis has suggested except for a few changes from my side:
Processor: Intel Core i7 920 - 14.5k
Gigabyte EX58-UD5 - 16.1k
GPU: ATI HD5970 2GB GDDR5 - 40k
HDD: WD 1TB SATAII BLACK - 5.5K (significant performance gains over the seagate mentioned by Anubis
Cabinet: Coolermaster HAF 922 - Rs. 7436.

SMPS: Corsair TX 750 - 7.8k
Keyboard: Logitech G15 -4K
Mouse: Logitech G5 - 3.2K ( I would much rather go for Logitech G500 if you could get it from US. Its about 55 USD on Newegg)

RAM: if its for gaming and you feel you are on a tight budget go for 3 GB for now and upgrade to 6GB later. You wont see a difference. Most of the games that I play dont go over 2.5 GB (this includes the total memory consumption by the system)
Add a CPU cooler to your config (SCCF - 2.5K) and overclock your processor.
Total - Rs. 105336

If you go with 5870 with all the other components same as I suggested
Total - 89K

For a monitor, you tell me what size you want? I will tell you the best monitor for the size and/or price

I have two other builds to suggest, if you find this overpriced.

ATI HD5970 will last 1.5-2yrs at 1920x1080/1920x1200

coming from a mac you'll hate sub 30k PC Monitors to the core 1st, then you'll hate the cable clutter & lastly you'll hate the overall OS responsiveness if you don't a very fast OS HDD

Processor: Intel Core i7 920 - 15k

Gigabyte EX58-UD5 - 16k

RAM: G.SKILL 3x2GB DDR3 2000MHz Kit - 10.5k (Theitdepot - G.Skill F3-16000CL9T-6GBRH DDR3-2000 PC3-16000 2GBX3)

GPU: ATI HD5970 2GB GDDR5 - 40k

HDD: Western Digital WD6400AAKS 640GB - 3k (2nd only to Velicoraptor & SSD's for OS)

Cabinet: Coolermaster HAF 922 or NZXT Tempest - 7k (only few sub 10k Cabinets can fit a HD5970)

SMPS: Corsair HX850 - 10k (to be safe if not then HX750 for 8-9k)

Keyboard: Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 - 1k

Mouse: Logitech MX518 - 1.5k

Mouse Pad: Razer Goliathus - 1k

Total - 103.4k
