hi guys

i am at present playing nfs shift 2 and assassins creed brotherhood(1280x1024,4xmsaa,and rest at high settings) the fps which i get in these games are 25 to 35 only is this normal?i started monitoring gpuz and one thing i found odd was my vddc current % never go above 18.(attached image when i was playing nfs shift 2)

my cpu - amd athlon x2 245(2.9ghz)
RAM-3gb
Psu - fsp sagaII 500w
catalyst 11.3(tried 11.4 and reverted back to 11.3)

The athlon X2 may be a bottleneck. Some games require more cpu power and more cores.I have a 5770 coupled with a e4500 and its very slow in some games.

Well, I do know that in lower resolutions the games are increasingly CPU dependent, but not this much. Something's wrong.

DO a stress test, like FURMARK on your G.card please.

Well, your hardware is pretty ancient and I doubt whether this is abnormal for your hardware.

Just for an example, my 6970 gives about 60+ FPS avg with NFS Shift 2 at 1920x1080 4x AA (not MSAA) Max. To get the same performance at 1680x1050 you will probably need a 5870/6950. To get the same performance at 1440x900 you will need a 5850 level card and that rez is the same as 1280x1024. Now with 4x MSAA, a 5850 will probably give about 4O+- FPS or so perhaps with NFS Shift 2. So a 5770 and 25-30 FPS sounds perfectly fine. Also, here we are talking of a Core i7 SB @ 4+ Ghz. So with a C2D level CPU, you can expect about half the FPS. I would say your performance is at least as good as it should be.

You need to upgrade if you need decent performance at max settings especially with AA and SLI/CF for MSAA.

thanks guys for the replies

@comp@ddict I've tried furmark test and results were odd,on both 1920x1024 and 1280x1024 i almost got the same fps. actually a bit better on 1920x1080

1920x1080(no aa) 1920x1080(2Xmsaa) 1280x1024(no aa) 1280x1024(2Xmsaa)
max-34 max-23 max-31 max-23
avg.-27 avg.-18 avg.-26 avg.-18
min.-26 min.-18 min.-24 min.-15

also i've mentioned earlier about vddc current %,this time it went up to 26(is my card getting proper power?)

Now with 4x MSAA, a 5850 will probably give about 4O+- FPS or so perhaps with NFS Shift 2.

I get 60 at 1920x1080, but I deleted the game so cant run the bench again sorry.

@ OP, set to 0xAA and check performance

No, you can't. With 1920x1080 4x AA (not MSAA), I get 50-70 FPS and I have a 6970 with a Core i7 SB. And that is perfectly normal.

a 5770 perfects 1/4 of a 6970, approx, so expect 15-20 fps tops at this setting.

you can try to overclock your processor and graphics card but make sure your cabinet have a good airflow and always monitor your temprature and do stress test for min of 30mins to ensure your system is stable. you can search in youtube if you are new to overclocking.

will test and let you know by tomorrow .. and BTW try 10.04 driver that did work better than the recent ones for me .

alright i don't know whats wrong but yesterday i did post my furmark results but i don't know for what reason it didn't appear
so i am posting it again.

the results were odd.i actually got bit better fps at 1920x1080 then 1280x1024!!!weird..

resolution 1920x1080(no msaa)
max.fps-34
avg.fps-27
min.fps-26

resolution 1280x1024(no msaa)
max.fps-31
avg.fps-26
min.fps-24

also i did google about hd 5770 furmark perfomance and found that people tend to get about 55 to 60 fps at 1920x1080(no msaa) so mine seems to be under perfoming.
also in the first post i did mentioned about vddc current%,during furmark test it went up to 26,is it normal? or it should be more? i mean is there any under-voltage problem?

@comp@ddict i did test assassins creed without AA and fps increased only by 2 to 3 while in nfs shift 2 it increased by 5 to 7.

1. IMO most probably your PC is perfectly fine and the AA and AA off results are perfectly normal.

2. Your NFS Shift 2 results are perfectly normal too.

3. To be extra sure, benchmark Crysis 1 (not Warhead) and 3D Mark 2011 and get back to us.

4. Also, a fast quad core may give twice the FPS as an avg dual core. So that might explain your Furmark results. Also, AFAIK (not sure on this), you need to post your Furmark scores and not just your FPS to help us draw a fair comparison.

First FurMark Benchmark Results with ATI Radeon HD 5870 and HD 5850 - 3D Tech News, Pixel Hacking, Data Visualization and 3D Programming - Geeks3D.com

According to this link, a 4890 gets 49 FPS. So a 5770 should probably get around 40 FPS avg. And this is probably with a high clocked C2D/C2Q or something. You can't get more than 50-75% of this result.

@rite
here are the furmark scores for different res.

1920x1080-1598 points
1280x1024-1599 points

and my friend please watch this..

i know that this person has i7 and look like thats the culprit(my cpu),today i tested my card with 1024x768(without msaa) on furmark and the result was similar to 1920x1080 or 1280x1024(without msaa)i was monitoring activity of my cpu using using core temp during furmark test and seen that one of my core was kicking to 100% usage so it looks like no matter at what resolution i play i am going to get same fps with this cpu.

This won't help.

A Core i7 will be at least twice as fast as your system. The reason you aren't getting better FPS is because you are CPU limited. Your CPU isn't capable of giving more than 30 FPS no matter what setting you use.

And no matter what AMD system you take, Core i7 is going to be leaps and bounds ahead of it. The cheapest thing would be to buy a second hand Core i5 750 and new mobo.

Ok this is seriously a bit confusing, dont get it why furmark gets all charged up and performs better at 1920x1080. Well, do the crysis benchmark, if the issue persists, we'll have to look somewhere else to find the problem(p.s. - check the power connector to the graphic card once would you)

Just play with MSAA turned off. To really see if your GPU is kicking in evenly, run Rivatuner side by side, and see the GPU usage. Probably at higher resolutions you should loose the CPU binding since that is bottle necking, but again it can vary game to game since some games do not realize the accelerator as much. Your scores overall seem normal. You need to tone done in-game 3D settings.

@Comp@Addict:

The reason Furmark is an anomaly -- cause it is pure synthetic. It almost scales your GPU near 100%. Not a good way to really compares cards. Also a nice way to kill the GPU too...! :) I am sure you know this, best is to check if the GPU is kicking in to the high 80%+ in-game, after that it is a fine balance off:

1. Drivers.

2. In-game settings.

3. Game realization of the GPU/CPU combination.

4. PhysX availability.

5. Multi-Core/HT architecture of the chipset.

6. FPS capping.

7. Game patch.

But I still dont get why his performance drop in games is so low when going from 1280x1024 to 1920x1080, big anamoly. Well its actually a good thing.

@ OP, HD5770 is a powerful card, turn of AA and enjoy gaming, trust me the IQ with AA enhances marginally, and the difference is most notable only when you use something like 8xSSAA(I go crazy sometimes) and when you take a screenshot and zoom in, otherwise, trust me, if you are indeed concentrating in the game, you won't notice at all.

@OP Dude..I played Assassin's creed Brotherhood at 1600x900 4xMSAA.Frame rates were very good definitely much higher than 25-35 that you are getting.Only difference is our CPUs but I don't think it should make this big a difference. So I think there must be an issue.Look for someone online or elsewhere with a similar config and try cross check your performance.

@comp@ddict i have never played any game at 1920x1080 res.because my monitor simply do not support that res.(max res.1820x1024).the fps which i mentioned was furmark results only.as far as AA goes believe me it does effect IQ a lot at 1280x1024,without AA car geometry doesn't look real due to jagged lines,i even don't mind turning AA off if i get significant performance boost but it only increases fps by 2 to5 and yes did checked power cord twice it's perfectly fine.

@nuke'em Thanks dude for the info...

@asingh i always use driver sweeper when updating or downgrading drivers so i guess thats not an issue.

as far as crysis bench goes i don't have a game and demo is appx.1gb of size so it would take a long time to download.is there any other way out?

have you guys checked the youtube video in my earlier post?he was getting avg.59 fps at 1920x1080(no msaa)with i7 so i thought my cpu is the reason behind this.there is one thing i want ask that why furmark used only one core of my cpu while other was almost idle?
