Storage Solutions Is my HDD failing?

Over the past 2 days, my computer is undergoing massive slowdowns every time I try to access something from one particular drive. It's fine as long as I'm running programs off my system drive which is an SSD.

If I open this particular drive in Windows Explorer, it shows me the first 2 folder levels fine, but when I navigate into a couple of folders, I often get a Not Responding error. I'm not sure why this is happening as I haven't changed anything recently, it seems rather out of the blue.

I used Windows 8 CHKDSK which says it's fine. I also ran the optimize tool which completed successfully, but it doesn't seem to have fixed anything. A couple of times, Windows even boots up without this particular drive showing up at all.

What should I do?

Run a check disk with the option of scan for and correct bad sectors ticked. Windows will block
access to the damaged sectors, and you should be able to access the disk properly again. It'll probably take a few hours to run on a large disk, so be patient.

Edit...just re-read your post.
Since it doesn't always get detected you've got either
1) a bad cable ( change the SATA cable, and the power cable)

or

2) a dying drive
