I have Ubuntu 9.04. Rest of the system is in my signature. I have installed the latest version of ATI Linux drivers from there site. Currently it is lagging on VLC and MPlayer.

try the ffmpeg-mt version with mplayer should make it smooth. Else if you are ok with less frames try the drop frames option/hard drop frames. BTW is this 720p or 1080p?

It runs with the above solutions but uses up all my CPU. Isn't the OS supposed to use my Graphic card for that. Is there any way to do that?

Code:
sudo apt-get install smplayer

You can even play m2ts in Linux. Although the Smplayer deb seems to be flaky in ubuntu. SO compile it yourself, no issues in mdv whatsoever :P

yes its supposed to but then ATI does not have any drivers with XvBA a.k.a hardware acc for BD in linux yet. Blame ATI for that :bleh:

Bah i use the PPA's :P

Xvba or Avivo has arrived with 9.11 :P So hope for mature support soon. the only downside is, it will be available only in 4XXX and higher card.

yes but it will take another 6 months atleast to stabilize like vdpau :P

I use Xine with frameskip enabled to play BD content on weak CPUs.

Video acceleration in linux is slowly coming in (read phoronix.com) but right now there are lots of competing technologies out of which NONE has stabilized and most are only interim solutions.

One of the reasons I'm being pwned when it comes to selecting a laptop is that I can never be sure if the hardware I buy would finally support acceleration or not.
