Hi!

I'm looking to buy a good prime lens. I'm totally impressed at how well they can perform. However, I'm not willing to invest a bomb over it.

How is this lens? -- Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Are there any better performers for roughly the same cost from sigma or tamron?

Also, where can I buy them online for cheap. The lowest price I found for it was for Rs.5,195.00 (same ebay link)

Thanks

Close your eyes and go for the Canon 50mm f/1.8....

It might not be the best prime lens, but it is surely the best for the price it comes.. total VFM lens to start the prime journey.

It is available for 5k is most shops.. U might get below 5k also if u hunt a bit

50mm 1.8 is available for Rs.4750..I would suggest to go for a new one..It's a value for money lens,Although,I didn't liked the built quality of the lens...

It's a full plastic and lightest of all canon lenses.

Thanks all. I'm not really concerned about the plastic-ness of the lens.. It does look like a toy lens though, as long as it delivers quality, its good enough! :)

Exactly!!! Total VFM, there are very few lenses in a photographic system like 50 f/1.8; no need to even think and decide, simply go and buy. :) If you are shooting with your kit lens then you will find this lens a bit fast focusing.

the thing that can define the word 'VFM' is the 50mm f/1.8 lens :P

Amen. One of the few "no-brainers" in photography is the fast fifty. It will change the way you shoot at night, indoors, and anyplace involving "available darkness." Excellent for portraiture on DX/APS. Can be used reversed for very good macro work. Many applications. All that and dirt cheap too!

For 5k its probably THE cheapest lens you can ever get brand new. Its also probably the best bang for the buck lens around considering its performance is great at its price point and better similar lenses offer slightly better IQ and improve mostly on the build quality only.

My 50mm will also turn 15 or 20 years old in a few weeks !!! :D

Same here, mine turns ~15 soon :P

On a side note, i bought a much older Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.8. Its a manual lens, however it BLOWS away the Canon waaaaay away in everything else except for AF :P

JJM over-quotes for almost every camera and lesn these days . The Canon 50mm should be easily available for 4.7k or less in shops at Fort. I remember a friend had once bought it for 4450 after bargaining hard ;),
